Second Floor Common Room, Wednesday Evening

For the Darkest Night finale episode, Tony ~~handwavily~~ picked up a couple of pizzas and several pints of ice cream. He filled up a plate for himself with a little of each. Mmm, pepperoni and chocolate. Wasn't too bad, actually.

Tonight's season finale episode featured a number of flashbacks from Raymond Dark's life. From the previews, it looked like most of them involved waterfalls, children in white clothing and butterflies. Very existential. Tony hoped they could fit some shirtless Lee in there somewhere. Maybe under the waterfall.

Tahiri laughed. "Hey, you give it a shot at least. That's good, right?"

"Totally," Rose said quickly. "It's really cool! I'm just not sure about that whole space thing yet."

"Really? Because I worry about atmospheric flight more," Tahiri replied. "Gravity's one more thing you have to focus on. Unless you're dealing with interdictors, or ships with dovin basals . . ."

"You lost me right around 'interdictors,'" she said. "What's that?"

"Oh, sorry," Tahiri blurted out sheepishly. "They're capital ships that can generate gravity wells. But mostly when you're out in space there's no gravity to worry about."

"Are you a Jedi too?" Rose asked curiously. "Everyone who talks about space has been so far."

Tahiri laughed. "I am, yeah, but not everybody who talks about space here is, honestly. Hey . . . you were sparring Ben in Fight Club, weren't you? And if I remember the radio right, that makes you Rose."

Rose grinned, startled by the connection. "Yeah, exactly. He's really damn good."

"He is." Tahiri's grin got a whole lot broader. "I was watching that fight. You did pretty good yourself."

She looked embarrassed but pleased. "Thank you. I'm really pretty rusty though." She tilted her head towards Tahiri. "I still don't know your name?"

"Oh, right, sorry. I'm Tahiri. I used to be better about introductions." She shrugged, looking sheepish. "Of course, I used to talk at people whether they wanted me to or not. Stick around Fight Club long enough and you won't be rusty, promise."

"What do you do now?" Rose asked curiously. She nodded. "That's the idea. Needs to happen as quickly as possible."

Tahiri shrugged, trying to look nonchalant about it, and really, it had been a couple of years anyway. "I got older, pretty much. Fighting is something you need to be good at where you're from too? We get that a lot around here, so I guess I'm not surprised."

"Weird how that happens, huh?" she said wryly. "Yeah, I got a lot out of practice in the last few years. So..." she shrugged.

"Shocking," Tahiri replied, the corner of her mouth quirking slightly. "I bet Ben probably explained something about the Jedi, because he manages to beat me to explaining this to all the new kids somehow. But what do you do?"

"He gave me the rundown," Rose agreed, looking amused. "But you wouldn't believe how many other people have mentioned you guys too. I'm a Guardian. Or I'll swear my oath when I turn 18. So basically bodyguard."

"There are kind of a lot of us around," Tahiri had to admit. "And now there's Elspeth, who's kind of like her world's version of a Jedi as far as I can tell, and . . . yeah, for that, you'll definitely need the practice. You have to swear an oath? Really? How long have you wanted to do this?"

"I've met Elspeth," Rose said. "Her people sound too good to be true." She nodded. "I've been training since I was sent to school at four. It's all I've ever wanted to do."

Tahiri really couldn't help laughing. "There really is a lot of that going around at this school. You know, if you're ever up for it, I could always use more practice too."

"Really?" Rose looked up eagerly. "You're on. Anytime. As long as you know, you'll probably kick my ass handily."

"No matter what Ben says, I'm not as good as he is," Tahiri assured her. "I didn't get as much fight training as I really should've before I got thrown into the war."

She tilted her head as she watched Tahiri curiously. "Ben mentioned a war too. That really, really sucks. I'm sorry. I can't even imagine what that's like. ~~Luckily canon will throw me into one in two books!~~"

"Different war." Tahiri managed to keep her reaction to a slight, sardonic quirk of her lips. "We get a lot of those in our galaxy. ~~Can't imagine why. Not like it's IN THE NAME OR AN -- oh wait.~~ So I've still got a lot to learn too."

Rose frowned. "Like you're from different parts of the galaxy with its own war? One of my teachers said it's over if you don't have anything else to learn." She made a face. "I hated him, but he sorta has a point."

"Different points in time," Tahiri clarified, keeping that vague, because who needed the weirding out? "I'm getting the feeling it's a neverending learning process. Good thing I always liked learning new things, huh?"
