The Second Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening
Karla was nervous. Well, that wasn't much of a surprise. Karla had been nervous all day. But this was a new and different kind of nervous. Now, she was about to host a party, which she had never done, in a world that was still foreign to her, and for many girls she did not know very well. It was enough to unsettle even the strongest nerves.
Still, she though she was ready. Dinah had promised to provide her laptop for movies. Karla and Gabrielle had gone to Turtle's and purchased lots ofmoddable snacks, sodas, and lots of candy and chocolates. She'd bought make-up, since Dinah had mentioned it's importance in such matters, plenty of blankets and pillows to share, and several other sundries because she wasn't entirely certain what else would be needed, and wished to be prepared. Also, lots of booze, from her private Kaeleeran stash.
Most importantly, there was a small, neatly lettered sign on the door that said 'No Males Please.'
Well, she was as ready as she was ever going to be. "Kiss kiss," she muttered.

"They're just a kind of phone. Like the one we all have in our rooms? But you can carry it around."
She held it up so the other girl could see the numbers on it.
"I bought it yesterday so I'm still figuring it out. I did manage to call my brother with it today."

"I guess. I talk into this thing here, and I can talk to my brother at a whole different school. He doesn't have one of these yet since his school's a little more strict, but he said he'd probably go get one on the first weekend trip to town they have."

"No. Just an arrangement with a company that will provide the service."

"It's pretty common," she admitted, "but this is a pretty expensive model. But it does a lot of things."

"It's got a camera, which I figured out how to use so I could show some of the people here to Eliot. And there's a music player, but I don't have that figured out either."

"No, it lets you take images from here and now and preserve them for later. You can use the, er, Farseeing device here," and she tapped the side of the phone, "to send the picture elsewhere."

Fiona turned the phone in her hand and pressed the button to power it on.
"When you press this," she said, pointing to the little icon with what looked like a box with a circle inside of it, "it goes into 'camera mode'. See how you can see what's on the other side on this screen here?"
She moved the phone slowly back and forth, then tilted the camera to point at the lens.
"Whatever that can see, you can take a picture of it."

"It's saved here, a piece of information. Like a memory would be? That's what they call it. The phone's memory. Then I can see if I want, whenever I want."
