The Second Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

Karla was nervous. Well, that wasn't much of a surprise. Karla had been nervous all day. But this was a new and different kind of nervous. Now, she was about to host a party, which she had never done, in a world that was still foreign to her, and for many girls she did not know very well. It was enough to unsettle even the strongest nerves.

Still, she though she was ready. Dinah had promised to provide her laptop for movies. Karla and Gabrielle had gone to Turtle's and purchased lots of ~~moddable~~ snacks, sodas, and lots of candy and chocolates. She'd bought make-up, since Dinah had mentioned it's importance in such matters, plenty of blankets and pillows to share, and several other sundries because she wasn't entirely certain what else would be needed, and wished to be prepared. Also, lots of booze, from her private Kaeleeran stash.

Most importantly, there was a small, neatly lettered sign on the door that said 'No Males Please.'

Well, she was as ready as she was ever going to be. "Kiss kiss," she muttered.

"I'd be happy to have company," she smiled.

"Not really. I haven't actually been out in town much yet," she admitted. "I found a few things at the general store, but no good herbal shops that I know of."

"Perhaps Ino will let us have a bit more of the garden, to plant some," Karla mused. "It would be nice to have our own supplies, wouldn't it?"

"Have you ever had ~~handwavey~~ tea?" Karla asked.

[The mun has no idea about tea. Sorry. --Mgmt.]

"That might be nice, though I haven't met this Ino yet."

She smirked, "I have tea all the time." ~~it's a Brit thing/strike>~~

My bad; I meant to suggest a specific type of handwavey tea. Sorry, Karla should have said 'handwavey-type of tea.' But the only fancy tea I know about is pennyroyal, and that's less a question and more of an innuendo. (Don't know teas but I like poisons).

"She's here," Karla said, looking for Ino to point her out. "She's got blonde hair--Oh, wait, that description isn't exactly helpful here, is it? Ah, there she is. She owns the garden near the dorms."

Eleanor looked around and nodded when she thought she had spotted her. "I'll make sure to meet her and ask." She tilted her head a bit, "I suppose there isn't many redheads."

"Not really, no. But that just means you stand out more," Karla said, giving Eleanor's hair an appreciative glance. "Yours is quite lovely. In Glacia, blonde is the most common hair color, so I'm used to blending in. Though I hear that isn't the case for most of Kaeleer."

"Thank you. Although I'm not certain that standing out is always a good thing," she smirked. What's it like on the rest of your world?"

"We run the gamut," Karla answered. "Blonde, red, brunette...The Deal al Mon are mostly silver-blonde. Eyeriens have black hair, tigre-kin have striped pelts," she shrugged. "Kaeleer's a very large Realm," she said, almost as an apology.

"It sounds fascinating. I must admit that I find it strange about the animals. Do they speak as well?"

"Kindred animals speak on psychic threads," Karla said, nodding. "Pixies, centaurs, satyrs, and tigre-kin all speak normally, like you and I. It's odd; Kaeleer has humans, which include the Dea al Mon, the kindred like the wolves and unicorns, and then an odd blending of the two. Tigre-kin, satyrs, and centaurs are the closest to kindred, though we still still count them as human, and Eyriens are closest to human, though they have great black wings. We're very diverse."

"So it would seem," she smiled slightly. "I can't imagine what it would be like living with so many different things."

"Well, we all have our own Territories," Karla explained. "I live in Glacia, the Eyeriens live in Askavi, the satyrs in Pandar, the pixies in the Paw Islands, the unicorns in Scelt, the Tigre-kin in Tigrelan, and so on and so forth. Though most of the kindred animals with landen counterparts live in human Territories. Arcerian cats make Glacia their home, too, just usually far away from human settlements."

"It sounds so exotic compared to my own home."

Broom wasn't exciting at all.

"It is exotic," Karla agreed carelessly. "It's also quite dangerous. In ways that are much less exciting than being caught in an Arachnian dream-web or threatened by a unicorn riding the killing edge. In many ways, it's a banal, sordid kind of danger. The kind that kills soulds, shatters minds, and breaks witches. I can't tell you how often I've wished Glacia was a little more boring." Her voice was bitter by the end.

"Oh. I see. Has any such thing ever happened to you?" she asked quietly.

Karla galnced up, and different emotions roiling in her eyes. "I am a Healer," she said quietly, deftly side-stepping the question. "I've had to put together the broken pieces too many times. There's nothing worse than healing the body, only to find there's no mind to sing back to it."

She nodded, "I'm terribly sorry. I probably shouldn't have asked that." There was a bit of pause before she added, "It's a flaw I have."

"Between the two, I'd rather have too blunt. Especially since I'm that way myself," Karla assured her.

"That's good to here," she grinned. "Back home, there are expectations for what women should or should not do." She snorted. "As if there is nothing more for a woman than hosting parties and having children."

"Where I'm from, no one tells a witch how to behave," she said with a grin. "Well, some try, but they don't get anywhere."

"That would be nice. But magic isn't common knowledge back home. And most mages prefer to keep it that way."

"Why? What have they to fear from landens," Karla asked, sounding almost scandalized. "I mean, people with no magic."

"It's not the mages, rather it's the people. Magic is only in fairy tales or myths. If people knew of the existance of magic, it would probably be panic. Simply because they don't understand it or they may fear that a mage is going to strike them down in the middle of the night."

She gave a slight shrug, "People are the most irrational of creatures."

Karla laughed. "That, I have found, is a constant in both our worlds. Landens in my world fear magic and the Blood, too. It is unfortunate, but they do. I cannot say their fear is unjustified, either, as human nature is human nature, and oftentimes the strong will prey on the weak. But, while we are also outnumbered by the landens, I have a feeling our ratio is closer than yours."

The strong will prey on the weak. Yes, they do.

She nodded, "There only seem to be a handful of mages compared to the rest of the population. And not all mages use their magic for the greater good. There are those who desire power and care only for their own goals and wishes."

Eleanor would know.
