"Today," Arthur called, once enough had gathered on the field, "We have two matters to discuss with you before we continue to the work of the day. First of all, all of you who have 'phone numbers', please exchange them with us and your fellow reserve members. This will help communication come the next attack. Also, you may have noticed the magic and support reserves that are currently being set up on the island; if you have any skills to lend there as well, I'd like you to show up. We can use everyone we've got." That over with, he rolled his shoulders, and nodded at the ~~modded, oh so modded~~ puppy up front. And then at Leto. "Second of all..."

Leto glanced at him, and then turned to the group. "We have decided to have Zack join us as leader for the reserve. His military experience will certainly be useful, and with the three of us to organise you will get a quicker response to any questions you might have." Also, Zack was cheerful. That could be an advantage, at least during planning meetings with Arthur.

As long as Zack didn't try hugging him in front of Leto, all should be fine. Arthur scraped his throat. "Now that that's over and done with, today is about learning what you're dealing with. I want you all to pick a partner who uses a weapon you have no proficiency in. Today, and over the course of the week, the two of you should learn as much as you can about the weapon, and the strategies that can be used with it."

"And as usual, if you have any questions or anything you want to discuss, don't hesitate to talk to us," Leto added.

"That will be all," Arthur finished, and nodded. "Get to it!"

Gabrielle tapped a finger against her lips. "I don't know if you could call her that, but she's very experienced. In a lot of ways."

"Hmm. Well, why don't you tell me about your fighting style?" he asked.

"Well . . ." Gabrielle went into a quick ~~handwavey la~~ explanation of her staffwork, which focused heavily on disarming and incapacitating, generally while being ganged up on by three or four people. "You'd think they'd go after the tall dangerous one, but nooooo."

"People are no different from wolves," Kenshin replied. "Predators. More likely to go after the weaker member of a group first."

She frowned slightly, but had to nod in agreement. "I'd like to believe some people are better than that, but I've seen that behavior too many times."

"Some are," Kenshin replied. "But very few, that I've seen."

She really, really felt sorry for his world, if that was the case. "Maybe here, at least, there are a few more who are. It seems like it so far."

"I think there are some good people here," he agreed.

Gabrielle gave him a hopeful smile. "Does that help at all?"

She liked to know these things.

"Some," he allowed. "But I know what's waiting back home."

"Then you can hold onto the knowledge that somewhere out there, like here on this island, there are good people," Gabrielle suggested.

He smiled faintly.

"Oh, I know there are good people. That's why I fight. So they don't have to."

She understood that, and respected it. She couldn't not.

"That gets lonely sometimes. You do have friends, don't you?"

Because if he said no, she was going to fix that.

"No... Not until I came here," he replied. "Now, maybe."
