Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

"Okay!" Zack grinned as he bounced to the forefront of today's reserves meeting, more than happy to be able to take the reins today.

It meant that he got to be all responsible, or something. He was game for the challenge!

"Today we're going to focus on familiarizing ourselves with weapons that we might have never considered using! Because, let's face it, sometimes the unspeakable happens and we get caught in a jam without anything readily at our disposal but what we can grab from nearby. Either someone else is down for the count and you make do with their weapon, or you end up swinging around whatever you can reach. Being able to improvise is just as important as being a master of your weapon of choice."

"A broomstick can be a staff," said Arthur, who had no experience with that kind of thing. At all. Really. "Any sharp object can be thrown. Anything with an edge can be used as a dagger or a sword, provided you know how to use one, and where to look. I assume you all have eyes."

"And that's why our pile-o-stuff today is more than just the practise weapons we've been using," Zack agreed, putting his hands on his hips and grinning at the people gathered. "If you look close enough, you'll be able to find pretty much anything from bags of marbles to the kitchen sink. Grab something you'd never think of using otherwise, pair up, and put those weapons to use!"

Zack, of course, was making a grab for that random beach umbrella, there.

Arthur, meanwhile, was going for the broom. For no reason. Really.

[Please wait for the OCD! OCD is up! This reserves meeting is officially in-session!]

"Hacked my way through. We had to get out and the little girl wasn't looking good with all the smoke inhalation."

A twitch of a smile.

"Second trial."

"And a trial by fire at that," he remarked.

She ducked beneath her hair at that. She couldn't even think about Millhouse without wincing, half of him eternally on fire, never burning, his stomach a mess of nasty surgical scars that never seemed to heal.

"Right. The little girl was all right, though. Her name was Amanda. She was very thankful, or at least that's what Eliot said. I didn't get to talk to her much."

He tilted his head to try seeing past her hair. "You've actually saved a person. Of course she was thankful!"

"I guess..."

She looked around almost frantically now, not wanting to explain about how she'd murdered someone in front of a little girl. Or about how she was relatively sure the whole thing wouldn't have happened if she and Eliot didn't need the testing. Things to talk to him about some other time.

"I'll tell you about it later if you want," she finally said. "So! What were you thinking of picking?"

She seemed to disagree somehow, but he didn't push. "Sure, later," he agreed slowly. "I'm not sure what to pick, though I'm leaning towards grabbing something blunt since I'm not very used to weapons." Other than his own hands and feet.

"We might be able to figure out nunchuks for you, if you're familiar enough with working with them," she offered.

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
He looked almost sheepish, "I'm not very practiced with them, but I could always give it a try."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

She noticed and reached to put a hand on his arm.

"Whatever you think is best. I just offered to give you options."

She wigged the rubber band.

"Last minute alterations are a specialty."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Now that he had to laugh at. "You know, I think we should alter some things just because."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
She laughed as well.

"What do you want to chop up into bits, then? Or should we just make a few items a little leaner?"

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Griff picked up a nice mop and grinned at her. "This looks promising."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
She let the rubber band settle between her fingers.

"Whittle or chop?"

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I see no reason not to try both," he suggested, holding it out.

"We're making this a pair of tambo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tambo_(weapon)) if anyone asks," she said, sliding the rubber band against the wood to slice it in half. There was no need for sanding; the cut she made was almost glass-like in it's smoothness.

"Let me contour in some handles. Untraditional, but no doubt helpful."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
He was amazed as always by her skill and ability to so easily cut things. "It's like sculpting. But so exact."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
"I only cut what I want to cut," she told him with a smile up at him while she worked.

"That's how I don't cut my fingers or the axle of my yo-yo."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"It probably sounds strange, but it's quite magical to watch." Dork.

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
She finished with a smile at that.

"Remind me to let you listen to Eliot's music," she said.

"That's magic. But thank you all the same."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"You did let me listen," he reminded her. "Last week, that morning on the beach."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
There were other things that stuck in her mind from that discussion.

"I didn't remember," she admitted. "There were more important things."

Then she glanced at the pile, picking up a toaster.

"What shall we do with this one?"

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
He remembered all of that conversation, actually, even if he wasn't quite sure where it left them.

"Should we turn it into bits of metal to throw? Like stars?"

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
She grinned and nodded, pulling the rubber band off of her fingers to a point to create a very tiny little 'scalpel'. Then she started cutting.

"Perhaps I should mention this to Arthur or Zack?" she said thoughtfully, "since it might be useful.

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"They don't know you can cut things?" Griff verified. "I would have thought they'd noticed."

Re: Arrive! Mingle!

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
"They know I can cut things," she assured him, "but I doubt they'd thought of this kind of application."

She pursed her lips thoughtfully.

"I could probably think of a few others, really. And, of course, the part about the threads..."

She shook her head.

"I'll worry about it later."
