2nd Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

Karla was feeling Crafty today--though, admittedly, this was not exactly news. Karla was often in that kind of mood, regardless of whether the 'C' was capitalized or not. After the Magical Reserves meeting today, she'd decided it was a good day to stock up on some items for the Support Reserves. Magical potions unfortunately lost efficacy after a few hours, but a few simple Healing webs could be activated without her being around with only a few drops of blood, and could heal most minor to middling injuries. Calming potions would be useful in an emergency, as would sleeping draughts. Which reminded her that a few energy powders might be wise, too. Cooling or warming unguents, too, depending on when they'd be fighting. Plus the everyday, non-magical potions for things like bee-stings, sunburn (Karla, being very fair-skinned, made a lot of that), chafes, various aches and pains...

There were also some potions brewing that were for her own use, or to be shared with others, like her moon-time tea and the contraceptive brew, since it seemed like something to have handy for people.

And since she'd promised magical help to several people over the past few days, the common room seemed an easy enough place to find her. Plus, it had more counterspace, a sink, and a stove she was going to avoid until someone came in and taught her to use it properly. A few tongues of witchfire were enough to heat anything, anyway.

Anyone coming in would see Karla singing softly to herself, as she consulted a few large, leather bound books, fiddling around with various pots filled with herbal-scented liquids, or weaving webs in small, wooden looms.

[Common room is open! SP warning for me this evening.]

There was nothing cooler than pointy ears thank you very much. "No but you can get glowing tattoos in Bordertown."

"Really? Is it one of those blacklight things?" That might be cooler than pointy ears.

Blacklight, blacklight. She thought she'd heard that term. "Black light?"

"Yeah, that funny purple bulb that makes things glow? Like posters and stuff?"

"Oh I've heard of that, but never seen one. I've seen that effect done with magic though."

"With...magic? Can you do that?"

"Well," Leda said, slightly chagrined. "I can't. My parents put this geas on me so I can only use my magic in an emergency, or for practice. But yeah it's possible. Almost anything you can do with technology can be done with magic. In bordertown most motor vehicles are powered by spell boxes instead of gas."

"So... how do they know it's an emergency? Can't you just say it's needed and pull out the abracadabra?"

"Well I've tried declaring a fashion emergency so I could use it to color my hair, but that didn't work."

Jack laughed. "What, you really needed help with that?"

"I've honestly never tried it with dye. I've always used magic."

"Well, they make hair dye," he pointed out. He's seen Priestly.

"This all reminds me I need to talk to Priestly about that."

"What colors are you thinking?" he asked, trying to picture it.

"I've done red, green, purple, silver..."

"All at once?" he joked.

"Not the silver, but the others one December. By our calendar."

"So... your December is...our October or something?" he asked.

"I have no idea. Time just moves differently in Bordertown. We don't even bother to keep track of years."

Re: 2nd Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

[identity profile] inthereflexes.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"So... you're either five or two hundred years old?" Oh, innocent grin.

Re: 2nd Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well...let me put it a different way. We don't measure it like, 1990 something or whatever. I'm not actually sure how old I am because I was an orphan and they only guess I was about 5 or six when I got adopted. But like, we still do birthdays and stuff like that."

[identity profile] inthereflexes.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, man, I'm so sorry," he said. "Do they know what happened?"

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't really remember, but they say I wandered up to Dragons Tooth Hill out of Soho one day. Social Services picked me up and my parents adopted me."

"So... you ran away? It's good to know your rebel streak started young," he said, trying to make a joke.

"Well I ran away in Junior High. But...after a few years I had to go back home." As in, her home burned down and she was hospitilized for smoke inhalation and her parents found her there. "But before then? They just never found any sign of any parents."
