Third Floor Common Room, Late Sunday Morning

Kate had partaken in free common room breakfast on her first morning at Fandom High, so today she thought she’d return the favor.

Unfortunately pancakes were beyond her abilities and she didn’t want to call her brother for help, so she made a safe fruit salad instead. There was a big bowl of it on the kitchen counter, and it was meant for anyone who happened to make their way into the common room, new and old students alike.

She also had all her leftover chocolate coins in a smaller bowl on the table.

"Pretty well," Didi said. "Sleeping's kind of weird, isn't it? You close your eyes and you're just gone for a while. I like it."

"I hadn't really thought about it before," Jaime admitted. "I guess if you've been doing something all your life you don't tend to notice it."

"Yeah, that's sort of the thing I need to tell you," Didi said as she speared a chunk of pineapple. "So, technically, I've only been alive about 48 hours."

Jaime blinked, but he didn't look a surprised as he probably should have. "Oh. That... Huh."

Suddenly a lot of things made sense.

"That's different," he finally managed.

"Yeah," Didi said slowly. "So ... uh, you don't know what the Endless are, do you?"

She didn't expect him to. Most people didn't.

"Not by that name?" Jaime guessed. "You're some sort of... um... embodiment thing?" He didn't actually sound like he knew what that meant. It was just what the Scarab had said.

"And you're a good guesser," she complimented, though there was a question in the compliment. "Yeah. See, Death has to spend one day a century as a human. I got stuck this time. I'm the right age for school, so my brother ..."

She shrugged. "Are you okay?"

"Um... yeah... I... suppose if we're sharing secrets I should admit I'm not exactly guessing..."

Didi frowned. "Psychic? Sorcerer?" she guessed.

"Um... something like that." He glanced around. "I'll tell you about it when we're back in the room?" he suggested.

"I'm shy." Sort of.

"You don't strike me as that shy, but I can wait," Didi said easily. "You didn't run screaming. I can deal with anything else."

She could deal with the running screaming too, but it would be less pleasant.

"Well, you're the coolest embodiment of Death I've ever met," he pointed out. Only one, too, but whatever. "Besides..." He paused. "I barely know you. It'd be pretty uncool to just judge you and stuff..."

"You aren't likely to meet a lot of us," Didi said, gently laughing behind her hand. "But thanks. I got over trying to be creepy a long time ago. Way more fun to be cool."

"So... are you having any trouble adjusting or anything?" Jaime asked. "I mean... you're not usually stuck this way, right?"

Didi shook her head. "There's a theory about it, but it's lame. Maybe I'll tell you someday. It's nothing evil."

Which meant no total share mode, please.

"And it's odd," she added, "but nothing I mind too much. There's food and cute people. I could have gotten stuck as a slime mold, y'know?"

Jaime hoped his laugh conveyed his intention not to tell any of her secrets. "That would have sucked. I much prefer you the way you are to slime mold." That's right, Didi, he prefers you to slime mold. Jaime Reyes: master of the classy compliment.
