The gym- Tuesday evening

It seemed lately that Jaina was always getting used to a new schedule. The scary thing was that she was starting to find it so much easier to do so. After class, she did some work and surprisingly found some time that she could use to get some training in.

After a warmup on the machines, Jaina took her usual place at the punching bag, more for the exercise than the actual practice. And after a few minutes of beating the hell out of it just because, she took a step back and muttered to it, "Let's hope you never turn temporarily human."

"Eh, I can wait until you're done," she said. "I'm not so desperate that if I don't hit something, I'll break things with my mind."

Which was a weird joke to a Jedi.

"You've acquired that superpower, huh?" Jaina smirked. "It's okay. I'm kind of just in the mood to be active, they have machines for that." She paused. "And I can break things with my mind if that's not enough."

Rose grinned. "Lucky. See now I'm jealous of the superpower. I'll have to just deal with breaking things with my hands."

She moved toward the bag, totally ready to take it on.

"Please don't actually break the punching bag," she requested as she headed for the treadmill. "I don't take it well when people break the things that don't hit me back." She was still bitter about the salle's practice dummies.

Rose made a face at her. "God, even I'm not that rude. That's crap. Don't ever break the training equipment. First rule in the gym." She paused, punching the bag a few times. "Well, second. Right after 'don't hurt your training partners.'"

"What are we counting as 'hurt'?" she asked. "I hear a lot of complaints when I spar with certain people."

"Depends on the situation," Rose said with a shrug. "We used to spar on points and within zones so different there than, say, Fight Club. No breaking bones?"

"Is bruising bones okay?" Totally showing off, yes.

Rose spun around to kick the bag, waiting for it to bounce back before she kicked it again.

"Show off," she commented. "Depends on the person, don't you think? We're sparring? Sure, whatever goes. Some new kid? You'd totally go easier."

"Depends on how they were presenting themselves," Jaina said honestly, watching. It was like a show. It was kind of astral. "Watch them carefully enough, you find that some of them can take it."

"I meant a newbie to fighting," Rose corrected, throwing another set of punches at the bag, and she wasn't holding back at all. "The ones who get here and decide they're learning everything immediately."

"Ah. Then it would depend on whether they needed to be knocked down a notch or two. Which means going... okay, a lot easier. You're right there," she decided. Yes, this girl was in charge of a squadron. What of it? "You're definitely doing better with the bag than I was."

The bag was getting pounded a few more times before Rose stopped long enough to answer. "You were looking for exercise," she replied, reaching up to lift her ponytail off the back of her neck for a moment. "I'm punching it so I don't bitch people out tomorrow."

...People hit things before bitching anyone out? Amazing. "Anyone in particular?"

They did when they were actually trying really damn hard to not screw up their chance.

The punching bag was getting kicked in the head again. "Apparently I 'need to be more careful of my reputation.' Like we're in the freaking olden days or something."

Jaina slowed her pace a bit, frowning. "Why?" It was an important question, she felt.

"I don't know," Rose bitched. "He didn't tell me why." You didn't ask, Rose. "Just that I had to be careful. I guess he was listening to radio."

"Considering I can't remember offhand if I heard about you doing anything, I'm not sure you have a problem," she said. "Is anyone actually caring about your reputation here?"

"Other than him?" She snarked. "That's what I told him. No one here cares as long as you're not sleeping with someone's boyfriend." Rose kicked the bag hard. "I think he's trying to be protecty but damn!"

"Or unless you're related to half the island," Jaina said dryly. "And as someone who actually gets judged by her reputation a lot, one of the real bonuses here is that it does't really matter. Who's him, by the way?"

"Dimitri," she said dryly. "The only one I can't punch for saying shit like that." Rose looked up at him. "D'you have problems with your family members? Or enough dirt on them to keep it away?"

"My grandfather. And yes and no to the dirt." It was just stuff she'd only ever told one person, and when she felt she had to. "To be fair, I could tell him to meet me in the gym and I could punch him all I want, except them he'd criticize everything I did as I was doing it because that's not the way he does it and I'd just get madder."

Ahem.

Rose snorted. "Yeah, Dimitri would do that too. If he didn't just tell me to get out and running instead of wasting his time."

"See, I'm the one who walks out. Do they not get that that's not helpful? Half the time I think he does it just because he likes making me mad." Hey, Jaina? Not the time for your issues.

No, it totally was cause it made Rose stop obsessing about her own.

"It's cause they're tall," she decided. "And they think they're that much better. I don't care if the man fights like a god. I'm so going to kick his ass one day."

"You should," Jaina said. She'd yet to meet the guy.

She tilted her head, not exactly easy on a treadmill if you wanted to keep going in a straight line. "He fights like a god?"

Staying in a straight line on the treadmill was a good thing. Explaining how you cut your head open would be embarrassing.

"That's what the guys at school said," Rose said with a half-smile. She kept attacking the bag but some of the fury had worn off. "From what I've seen, he's pretty amazing."

"You keep telling me things that mean I have to see this guy. Now I'm hoping he's in Fight Club," Jaina said. "...Maybe he can get paired with my grandfather."

"That? Would be awesome," Rose said instantly. "He should be coming. It's at his gym. And I don't think he could pass up the workout with people who'll push him."

"Ohhhh, one of those types." Jaina was one herself, shhh.

Rose would've raised an eyebrow if she could. Instead she just gave Jaina a Look.

"Wait, are you mocking that?" She teased. "I still owe you lazy lessons even."

"I wasn't mocking," Jaina protested, even if yeah, she sort of had been, "I was just pointing out that I knew the type."

"Cause you are the type," Rose agreed.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting to get challenged. That's how you get better. Even if you're sporting bruises the next day from Kyle Katarn. I still learned a lot," she protested.

Rose nodded. "I learned a lot from fighting Deadpool, but it's still fun to mock you for being a total overachiever."

Huh. "How have I never been called that before?" she wondered. "Almost doesn't seem right."

Because Jaina's family was insane like this, that's why.

"Maybe everyone else thinks it's too obvious to say?" Rose pointed out.

"Or since the thought never occurred to me before, maybe it never did to anyone else," she shrugged. Easier to do on a treadmill than tilt your head.

Rose glanced over and gave her a smile. "Hardly a bad thing."
