The Roof; Saturday Afternoon

There were several ways to indicate fall was upon you. Changing leaves, of course, would be the obvious one. You could look at a calendar, which was just a boring way to do it. Or you could check to see if Chuck Bass was wearing his trademark scarf. Which he was. It truly was the greatest time of the year.

Yep, scarf around his neck and a joint in one hand, Chuck was laid back in a chair reading Les Liaisons dangereuses for about the tenth time. It was the only way he could keep his French in check without, you know, actually going to France.

"Oooh la la," he said, waving a hand around. "Who is this guy?"

"That's confidential information," she smirked. Confidential information that was kind of on the radio, yes.

"Are you being coy with me?" he asked, amused. "I bet I could find out."

"I'm sure you could." Unfortunately. "So I'd just rather give you the joy of finding out yourself. Where's the fun in me telling you?"

"Because then I could tease you mercilessly!" Hannibal said. Made sense to him!

"...You do realize that's not exactly encouraging me to tell you, right?"

"I'd tease you nicely," he added, "but mercilessly. At least I'm honest?"

"As much as it intrigues me how you could be both merciless and nice at the same time," she chuckled, "the answer is still no."

"Oh, Kate, you wound me," he said. "You almost make me wanna go through each guy I know for process of elimination."

"I'm happy there's an 'almost' there," Kate noted.

"Well, if you want me to try..." He grinned at her.

"I don't."

"Too bad, I was looking forward to just spouting off random names," he said and snickered.

"You wouldn't have been able to get a reaction from me, anyway," she said. "So you're not missing out on anything."

"See, I would have pulled out insane names and watched you laugh and then when you didn't react when I pulled out a regular name, I would have my answer," he declared.

"But there are many, many regular names that wouldn't make me laugh," she pointed out. "So basically you'd already have to know which regular name to throw at me to get a confirmation. That doesn't work."

"Well, I could narrow it down, get the single guys," he decided. "There's not a whole ton of them there. And then I'd just narrow it down from there."

"That's still a lot of guesswork," she replied. "Especially since you have no idea what my preferences are."

Not to mention that the definition of 'single' was tricky business, but she wasn't going to say anything about that.

"I'll pick a name I like and just start spreading rumors," he joked.

"Oh, then it'll be just like the old days," she said with a mock-wistful sigh.

"Oh, you're kidding," he said, wincing. "Really?"

"It was a little bit like that," she said, shrugging one shoulder. "Sometimes."

"I wouldn't ever do that for real," he promised. "That's not me. I was just teasing you."

"Relax, I know you wouldn't," she replied, offering him a little smile. "Just one of the many reasons this school is better for me."

"And besides, if I ever did, there's plenty of people, yourself included, with the permission to smack me," he assured her.
