The Deck, Early Saturday Morning

Winter was a while off yet, but it was considerably cooler than a few months ago. Naturally, this called for hot coffee. It was a good thing then that Edmund had been into town to the bakery and coffee shop. There was a large Thermos of hot coffee with some disposable cups and a box of pastries on the table if anyone came by. For now, Edmund was content to sit back in his deck chair and enjoy his breakfast.

"And not losing any limbs?"

He looked rather pleased with himself. "They're using wooden training swords for the foreseeable future. No sharp edges in sight. It's not what I expected since when Peter ran the club a few year ago there were more experienced swordsmen...and women but I like having something to do. Don't you?"

"Well, if it only took five minutes to become an expert on something, we wouldn't need the school," Jo said philosophically. "I do, but after some of the things this island likes to throw at people, a little boredom can be a good thing. Not too much of it though."

"Agreed," he nodded. "Enough boredom to keep us from turning into animals or being under attack, but not enough to drive us mad. There are plenty of other things to do that without boredom pitching in."

"And if all else fails we can always brood on the roof," Jo added. "Or go exploring the sixth floor, that used to be a thing."

"I'm not sure I want to make brooding a legitimate hobby. It's far more satisfying when it's a casual thing," he deadpanned. "I think they renovated the sixth floor. It would be worth a look. I heard something about a ball pit."

"But if it was, there could be a whole scoring system, like in sports," Jo suggested. "We could give points depending on how deeply someone expressed the pain in their souls."

"Yeah, I head that too. Those are supposed to be fun."

"A scoring system would make brooding somewhat productive," he conceded. "Do you want to go up to the sixth and have a look at it one night?"

"You could work in a whole sliding scale depending on what exactly they were brooding over," Jo added. "Hell, the squirrels probably have one already."

"Sounds like a plan," Jo said. "Did you have any night in particular in mind?"

"Monday?"

Jo nodded. "Monday works for me."

"If you happen to turn into a ferret between now and then, I'll forgive you if you don't show up."

"Believe me, I have no intention of that happening."

"You say that as if intentions ever matter when it comes to Fandom strangeness. Some days I think the island thinks it's funny."

"Like Wednesday?"

"Was that when the girls suddenly weren't girls or was there some other strangeness I missed this week?"

"If there was, we both did," Jo said, then added wistfully. "Waking up as a boy's a bit more fun when you have a boyfriend around to freak out with it though."

Edmund grinned. "Devious, and yet I can't deny your point. You sound like you've had that experience before. Does your boyfriend live elsewhere now?"

"The first it happened, Luke was sleeping over. I don't know which of us was more surprised," Jo explained. "Ex-boyfriend. He went home after he graduated last year, another galaxy's a bit too far for a long distance relationship."

"That would be," he tried to find the right word, "overwhelming to wake up to."

Jo snickered. "Just a bit, yeah."

"Do you stay in contact? With Luke."

[wannabehunter]

"On and off," Jo said. "Emails here and there mostly. There's this whole rebellion against an evil empire thing going on in his galaxy, kind of takes up time."

"Busy man," he nodded. "I suppose we have that to be thankful for here. We wouldn't really have time to go and visit the ball pit if we had a rebellion against an evil empire to run."

"Not unless there were secret documents in it or something."
