Samhain Celebration - Main Campfire of the Cabins, Sunday, Dusk

Having ~~handwavilyomg~~ put up some very, very poorly spelled signs with Tara for people to know about this, Merlin was more than happy to get things started.

If only because there had been some rather insistent candy yesterday and he'd tried some out of pity and now believed Halloween may be evil. So, there was that.

But he had everything all set up and hopefully there wouldn't be an attack of some also horrible sweet from his time. But this was Fandom, so that was an actual concern. Damn Fandom.

Arthur snickered. "Then saying it doesn't work is a very quick conclusion indeed," he said, "What, did you check it with someone?"

"A squiggle isn't a letter," Merlin replied firmly. "And only girls look into it for whoever they fancy at that point."

"You would know," Arthur granted him, taking another sip of his mead. Good spirits, at least. "This is the second one of this kind I've seen."

"Really?"

"We had a feast sometimes, for winter's eve," he said, tapping a finger against his glass. "But I had to sneak out of the castle to see anything like this." And then get his little eight-year-old arse hauled back indoors.

"Did you like it?" Merlin asked, taking a sip of his beer.

"I saw bonfires and some maids with half their kit off," Arthur said, with a snort. "Being eight, I fear it might have lost something in translation. My father had me back in the castle before I could blink."

"At least it wasn't Beltaine?" Merlin offered with a sheepish shrug. "Those get a bit more rowdy. Especially if the winter was long."

Arthur's eyebrows went up in an amused fashion. "So tell me about Beltaine in Ealdor," he said.

Merlin opened his mouth, ready to be completely scandalized, but...

"I never actually got to take part in them."

So much for tales of the depravity of country villages. Arthur tilted his head. "Why not?"

Merlin waggled his fingers as it to signify the magic. "Mum worried I wouldn't be able to control it on the holiday."

"Considering how well you do controlling everything else most of the time," Arthur granted, magnanimously. "Still. That's going a bit far."

Said the man whose father had a habit of dictating his behaviour based on ideological grounds.

Merlin just shrugged. "Someone told me I'm a creature of the the old religion once. It's possible," He said quietly into his beer.

"You look human enough to me," Arthur returned, evenly. "I've yet to see any creature of the old religion trip over his feet like that."

"Yeah." Merlin smiled and nodded, ignoring any funny feelings about those days. "How is your second Samhain then?"

"Well, no one's taken their kit off yet, but there aren't any soldiers hauling me home," he said, "So far, it's not looking too bad."

He still had his head tilted curiously at Merlin, though.

"I'm sure with enough mead, someone will." A beat. "Though it is rather cold..."

"A bit," he agreed. "Best haul you in early, then." Merlin's tolerance? Legendary.

"I'm not that bad." Oh yes he was.

Arthur shot him a dry look. "I'd rather have you up on the third floor when you can still walk than carry you again, whcih, by the way, is very much not my job."

Which didn't mean he wasn't going to do it whenever necessary, but still.

His smirk quirked into a smile instead. "So sit down and tell me what nonsense you came up with in Ealdor during the feast."

"Me?" Merlin scoffed. "Will and I usually ended up trying to nip some of the wine."

Arthur sniggered, making himself comfortable. "I can only imagine how badly that went."

"Only the one time he talked me into using magic to summon it to us." Merlin sighed. "That poor tree was never the same."

Many months of having a chance to get acquainted with the concept of magic plus Arthur being Arthur plus the way he phrased that meant that yes, Arthur was cracking up. "I am not surprised," he announced. "And as per usual, doubtful of your sanity as a wizard."
