The Roof, late Saturday Afternoon

Raven had spent a great deal of the day watching the snow fall outside her window before making her way up to the roof for a better view. The pristine blanket of white that covered the island took her breath away -- as did the drop in temperature. But for now, the view and the still heavily-falling snow dazzled her more than the cold bothered her, and she was so enchanted by her first sight of snow that soon she was spinning in circles, arms outstretched, catching snowflakes on her fingers and tongue.

It would get old. Eventually.

Raven didn't have time to move, so she suddenly found herself pinned beneath Jaime. Of course, she was initially more concerned about him than her own embarrassment. That would come in a minute. "Are you all right?" she asked.

He was in pretty much the same mental position. "I'm fine," Jaime answered quickly. "What about you?"

"I am all right," Raven said. She might have a few bruises, but nothing she couldn't banish.

Oh, there was the embarrassment. "I think you should get up," she said, blushing now.

"What?" Jaime blinked. "Oh! Yeah! Um..." Now he was scrambling to push himself up and out of her way. He was busy trying to convince himself that anything soft he'd been pressed against was just all the padding from the heavy winter clothes.

Which was why he was distracted enough to slip and fall again.

Except Raven wasn't wearing any heavy winter clothes. Oops.

Raven pushed herself up to her knees and remained there to kneel beside Jaime. "Are you certain you are all right?" she said, trying to sense if he had any injuries.

Raven was totally wearing heavy winter clothes in Jaime's head. He was working very hard at not noticing otherwise, too.

"Only my pride," he chuckled ruefully. And his dignity. And his... don't look at her lack of winter clothes equilibrium.

"I am sorry," Raven apologized. "The mistletoe surprised me. I did not want you to think you had to kiss me because you have a girlfriend." Well, that's what she thought from listening to the radio.

"No need to apologize," Jaime waved offhandedly and offered her a smile. "And I hadn't even noticed--" Wait. What?

"Wait... what?"

"Mistletoe," Raven said, misunderstanding. She pointed up where it had appeared, hovering above them in the air.

Jaime blinked up at it in surprise. "No, that part I got." And would have flailed about more if she hadn't distracted him. "I meant... girlfriend?"

"That is what I understood from what was said on the radio," Raven explained.

Jaime stared, speechless for a few seconds. "Really? What... did it say?"

He suspected that he was going to find the answer flail-inducing.

"That Thursday night you were on a date with Ino at A Taste of Thai," Raven said. "Was that incorrect? I know they sometimes say things that are not true on the radio." Especially if their name was Katchoo.

[weldedtomyspine]

"Oh. That." Jaime's face wasn't red from the cold, no.

"Yeah. We went on a date. But it was... just a friends thing." She'd dared him and it wasn't like his manly pride would let him turn that challenge down.

"Oh," Raven said, blushing again. It was just the cold as well, really! "I am sorry I assumed. I am still very inexperienced with recognizing relationships."

"Oh, hey, it's no big deal." Jaime's hasty assurance was accompanied by his scramble to stand up again. This time he even managed it.

And very pointedly did not look at the mistletoe.

Raven rose to her feet as well. "I did not want to cause trouble between you and Ino," she said. Like she had with Jono and Didi. "Kissing someone with a girlfriend would not be right."

[weldedtomyspine]

"Yeah, that's usually a bad idea," Jaime agreed. "But I don't have a girlfriend, so it'd be okay."

Wait. That's not what he meant..

"Oh," Raven said. Well, in that case, she knew she should respect tradition, so she leaned forward to give Jaime a quick kiss. On the lips, of course, because no one had told her it was acceptable to do so on the cheek instead.

Jaime was too surprised to do anything but stare. Then blink. Which made for a pretty boring kiss, really.

"Um... hi?" he managed, face burning.

Raven stepped back. "I am sorry," she said, blushing as well. "I thought that was what you wanted."

"I... er... Why did you think that?"

"I mean, not that I'm upset!" he added quickly, lest she get the wrong idea.

Just... confused.

"You said it would be okay," Raven said. "I thought you meant to observe the tradition of the mistletoe."

[weldedtomyspine]

"I... um... I meant that it would be okay if..." Jaime closed his mouth. "Oh," he eventually managed. "Yeah. I guess it did sound like that, huh...?"

"You are not upset?" Raven asked, trying to sort out the emotions she was picking up from Jaime. He didn't feel calm and composed to her.
