Yuletide Party! - By the Dorms, Monday Dusk Till Dawn

Between the dorms and preserve, a moderately sized--if only because dragging over more wood than was already stockpiled nearby was far too much work--fire was lit as the sun set and the longest night of the year began. In the main lobby and by the fire there were much larger supplies of spiced cider and ale.

...look, people in ye olde times really liked to get drunk and light things on fire. It was a time honored tradition.

"Not really," he said, shrugging a bit, "I mean, it's not a bad tradition." Wait. "You're a girl," he observed. No really. "Where would you send two girls?"

... are you really asking Karla for romantic advice for Katchoo and Francine, Arthur?

"Where would I send two girls what?" Karla asked, unable to follow his blinding logic beyond the 'you're a girl' observation.

"You know. If they want to have a nice time out. Maybe a weekend."

Night, Arthur. Katchoo had asked for a nice night.

"Ummm..."

Inwardly, Karla was flailing. A nice time out? By whose definition? And where? Mother Night, she wasn't even from this world!

"I, err, always like the theater," Karla suggested a little lamely. "And somewhere with bookshops?"

Because finding a place with a theater and a bookshop would really narrow down Arthur's search.

"Theatres and bookshops," Arthur said, dubiously. "Right. I will... keep that in mind."

Think, Karla, think!

"There's always Lost Vegas!" she said, abruptly remembering a show she'd caught on the teevee. "They have lots of hotels and a circus I think. Oh! And a bunch of wedding chapels! That must mean it's romantic!"

There was a pregnant pause. "I'm not sure they're that far in their... friendship." ...Yeah, no matter what Francine said, that part was still too weird to talk about. "But, Lost Vegas. That sounds nice. A bit like Canadia."

It was the blind and aristocratic leading the blind and aristocratic.

"I didn't mean they had to get married," Karla said, deliberately taking another sip of cider so she didn't let slip something about not being an idiot. "But if there are a lot of chapels, sure it means that the town as a whole has a romantic atmosphere. Why else would so many people end up getting married there?"

It all made perfect sense, really.

"I never used the word 'romantic'."

No, Arthur, you just implied it.

"But fair enough. Thank you." That was to be blamed on the ale.

"Perhaps I misinterpreted your question then," Karla said dryly. What with all those details he'd provided and all.

"And you're welcome," she added, because she wasn't about to let Arthur out-manner her. "I...appreciated being asked."

He granted her a kind nod.

They'd probably be able to kill with the amount of civility in this conversation. "Are you enjoying the celebration otherwise?" Take that.

"I am," Karla said, glancing over towards the fire. "It reminds me of home a bit. I find that I missed my own celebration and unable to go home for break anyway. This takes a little of the sting out of it."

"It is good to be surrounded by friends when family can't make it," he said, amicably.

Yes, because Uther Pendragon would have livened up this place. Really. "I at least have my foster sister here, at present."

He'd be back to clawing at Morgana's hair in a minute.

"Well, Merlin just told me that I was much like a 'very, scary sister' to him," Karla said, giving Arthur a slight sidelong glance. "Most of my blood family is dead, so I have learned the knack of treasuring family where I find it. And I don't think I could ask for a better brother than Merlin." She added the slightest emphasis to the word 'brother'. Hopefully, Arthur would see where she was going with this.

"He does remind me of my cousin Morton some. Who is blood-related to me."

Just. Saying.

"Well, I am glad he's of some use in that area."

Arthur had a feeling she was trying to Say Something. He was just... going with it. "Considering."

Karla resisted the urge to facepalm. How dense could one male be? Honestly?

So she tried again.

"I've never had a brother before. I'm surprised how easily these very fraternal feelings came to me," she continued, trying not to grit her teeth. "And how impossible they are to mistake for anything else."

Arthur shrugged, and cast a look towards Morgana. Vague memories of accidentally wandering in on her when he was fourteen - if by 'accidentally wandering in' you meant a misadventure involving a tree - darted past his mind.

Give it another moment.

Maybe two.

"Ah," he said, finally. "Well. Of course."

Oh Christ, she knew.

Not entirely. But she could guess a fair bit. She could read psychic scents after all.

"That's all I wanted to say," Karla said quietly. "Since we were discussing family and all."

Okay, so the odds that Arthur would read into that the intended statement of, "I'm sorry and I won't say anything to anyone, please don't worry," but that's what she meant.

"Obviously," he said, scrambling to recover as much as he possibly could, alcohol-haze pulling back at the worst of moments. "Fair enough." Now say something that isn't just a filler-word, Arthur. "I'm glad to hear that, and that he returns your sentiments. By any chance, would you like more cider?"

Re: By The Fire

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2009-12-22 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Only if you're getting something yourself. I'd hate to be a bother," Karla said, appropriately gracious.

Really.

[personal profile] bitchprince 2009-12-22 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, you are never a bother," he assured her. Gracious as well.

He got up.

Karla nearly choked on the dregs of her cider. "You are...too kind," she said, in between coughs, holding out her mug. "Yes, a refill would be much appreciated. Thank you."

Re: By The Fire

[personal profile] bitchprince 2009-12-22 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
He flashed her a not entirely genuine smile, took the mug, bowed his head, and left for the cider.

Oh, Arthur was chalking that one up as a win.

Dammit, he had so totally won that round. Karla was going to have to think of something extra-polite to come back with, otherwise she'd never be able to make up for that little debacle with the cider.
