Third floor common room [dinnertime]

As Mat had mentioned a few times, Mat couldn't cook with modern technology. But roasting things over a fire?

That, he could do.

So there he was, bundled in a few layers, roasting a few rabbits over the fire and feeling more homesick than he was willing to admit.

Oh like anything could've stopped Bobby from going outside today.

Unfortunately, the grumbling of his stomach did eventually bring him back inside. And led him back up to his floor's common room, where he could smell something cooking.

He flopped down on a couch, snowflakes still clinging to his hair. "What's for dinner?" he asked.

"Roasted meat," Mat said, grinning over at him. "Enjoy your time outside?"

"Meat, okay. I can work with that. Especially since I'm not the one cooking it. And yes, as a matter of fact, I did," he grinned. "It is awesome out there." As long as your definition of 'awesome' included 'ridiculous fucking blizzards'.

Hayley wandered down a floor and then into the common room, bundled up with a blanket draped over her.

"What's goin' on in here?" she asked, mostly out of just curiosity.

"I was out long enough to find dinner," Mat said, "but it is bloody cold out there."

"I'm knitting a sweater," Mat deadpanned, spinning the meat over the fire.

Hayley made a face. "Where's your needles, then, huh?" she said, though she was a little amused.

"I like the cold," Bobby said easily. And then-

waaaaitasecond.

"Find dinner? That's... not from the general store, is it?" he asked, eyeing the meat over the fire.

Leia wandered into the common room with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. "What happened to the heat? Why is it so cold?" she bitched complained.

"No," Mat said, proud of himself. It wasn't easy hitting a rabbit with a slingshot in the snow.

"I'm holding them now," Mat said, "and I'm making a lovely scarf, so if you can't see that, I pity you."

"I have no bloody idea, but I think the snow probably has something to with it," Mat said helpfully. "The fire's warm."

For someone not accustomed to extreme differences in weather temperatures, the shock of the cold was enough to almost make Jonas burrow back into his bed. But, it didn't get any better so he'd wrapped himself in his clothes, scarf and stocking cap before padding down to the common room.

The heat was welcome and Jonas gave a simple, quick nod to those inside. "Hello. I think it might be colder in here than outside."

"You can't put one over on me that easy," Hayley said, pointing a finger. "I know cooking when I see it."

"This is ridiculous," Leia grumbled, but she settled by the fire and held out her hands, rubbing them together to try to warm them.

"Storm knocked the power out," Bobby supplied helpfully, looking up at the sound of Nerf-eating-girl's voice.

He'd love nerf if he only tried it, really.

"Doesn't the school have any sort of back-up power in place?" Leia sighed.

"Okay," Bobby nodded. "Okay," he said again. Meat was meat, right, whether it came in a nice little package from the grocery section of a store or from the woods.

"That's handy. Good skill to have. Not really one I needed where I grew up," he admitted.

Mirax was not pleased by today, no. Bundled up and carrying a blanket with her, she announced, "It could be worse. There could be a fire drill."

"It's not," Bobby said easily. "Just seems that way 'cause you're used to inside being warmer. Shock to the system, or something."

Mat gestured around the room. "This is more what I'm used to," he admitted. "Cold, dark, and quiet." He laughed. "It's bloody dull."

"Then why did you ask what I was doing?" Mat asked.

"It's cozy," Mat replied, making room. "Want something to eat?"

"Have you been outside?" Jonas asked, wondering how he could know that. "Or are you used to cold temperatures and situations like this?"

"I think the fireplaces are their version of back-up power," Bobby said. He was pretty sure the fireplaces hadn't been there before, anyway.
