Sixth Floor, Thursday Evening -- Merlin's Birthday Party

If Arthur had still been back at Camelot, the idea of holding celebrations for a servant's birthday would have seemed preposterous. But he wasn't, and it didn't, and if he were really honest with himself he'd admit he enjoyed it (or at least in as much as it involved picking out presents that made him fret some on the inside and yelling at people about getting decorations in).

The Sixth Floor was decorated rather decadently for a birthday party. There were some CDs of painfully carefully selected songs playing through the system - the ones Arthur had judged least likely to shatter eardrums (and maybe tending towards the classical and medieval).

And there was food. Courtesy of Francine.

Arthur didn't like half-measures much.

Please, like Karla was going to miss Merlin's birthday celebrations, even if there was a cowardly part of her that quailed at having to see Arthur. Besides, he'd promised they'd never speak of it again and there was no way that she was going to hide from any male.

And deliberately skipping Merlin's party would be like kicking a puppy.

Far beyond charm into obsessively compulsive politeness, now. "Do avail yourself of the food, and enjoy yourself."

"Thank you, Arthur, I will," Karla said back, just as politely.

Still, looking around at all the effort that he had put in for Merlin's birthday had Karla softening, just a tad. "This looks really wonderful," she added, a bit of real warmth in her voice.

"Mmm," Arthur said, vaguely, "A few phone calls. But thank you."

For all the arrogance in his body, he didn't value what money could get all that much.

Karla felt pretty much the same way. "But there was still the desire to make it nice for him," she said. "You're welcome."

They had possibly exhausted their store of genuinely nice things to say to one another, but Karla was glad that there had been a genuinely nice comment or two to make.

Karla waved back. Her wave was less elegant, since was waving the fork she was using to eat the tasty meat-bake.

"Karla!" Merlin was bounding on over like an overly excited puppy. One that was trying to hug, mind. But still a puppy.

It was very okay. Karla happened to like puppies. "Happy birthday, Merlin!" Karla said, catching him in a hug. "This is wonderful! Don't tell Arthur but," she dropped her voice, "I'm impressed."

Merlin laughed far too loud at that. "You have my word, he'll never hear it from me."

"Good," Karla said approvingly. "I'd hate for our relationship to suddenly become less antagonistic on me. Then what would I do?"

Besides just up the ante with Azula, she meant.

"Does Camelot have traditions for people reaching their majorities?" Karla asked, going to lace her arm through his.

"Mostly just something like this," Merlin admitted. "Though, no ball pits or meat cakes there."

Karla gave Hurley a closer look. "You sure you're okay?" she asked, pitching her voice a little lower. "You seem...not entirely upbeat."
