Sixth Floor, Wednesday evening

Dinah had put up a few posters in stairwells - PARTY ON SIXTH FLOOR, ROY'S LATE 18th BIRTHDAY! - this morning on the way to work. She had a cake that had arrived special delivery from Alfred early today (with buttercream icing and chocolate ganache to die for inside), ice cream that she'd picked up a while back, and some silver and gold foil balloons and noisemakers scattered around the room.

Plus, of course, there was the ball pit.

Being inside eating cake and goodies was a lot better than being out in a fog with imaginary and real monsters in it.

Hey, Priestly was all for equality of the sexes. If that meant skimpy guys as well as girls, he could deal.

She just had to promise not to laugh at his tattoos and things.

"Happy Roy's birthday," he agreed. "So, how has the, uh. Stuff you and Dinah do sometimes been going?"

Look, he didn't know how out she and Dinah were with the superhero stuff. He could keep a secret identity.

The tattoos, no, but it totally depended on what the things were...

"Last time, it was pretty easy. We managed to find probably the only safe neighborhood in the whole city. But there were lots of rooftops so we did some practicing and just hung out."

She flashed a V-sign. "Ah! But if you ever want to visit a really safe, cute-looking Baltimore park, I can take you to one, now!"

"I dig parks," Priestly agreed. "Also, safety. Which is kind of hilarious considering that before I came here? I totally thought I was a tough guy."

"A tough guy? No way!" She totally could not imagine him being mean. "Like a gangster?"

"Okay, so maybe not that tough. But, you know, guys always think they can beat people up if they have to."

"Ah!" She stopped trying to picture him in yakuza styles; it wasn't working anyway. "Well, you could! If someone you care about is in danger, you would totally do what you needed to do to save them. You're totally that kind of guy."

Priestly laughed. "And probably get my ass handed to me after I finished tackling them. But, hey, it's the thought that counts, right?"

"You never know! You could win! My sister challenged a monster to a riddle contest and won!" Momoko stuck her tongue out at him, playfully. "And my friend once defeated one with only foot... I mean, soccer balls. You don't always have to have superpowers to be a hero, you know!"

"Although if he does have superpowers, you are totally not allowed to do anything before you call me. You have my number now!"

Priestly laughed. "I do! And yeah, I guess against your average thug I'd be okay. It's just kinda humbling to have your ass saved from zombies by your best friend."

"Well that's totally what best friends are for, right? To help when they need you!" Momoko actually hadn't been there to save her friend from being killed by zombies, but let's not go there.

"You're totally awesome just the way you are. Well, except for liking that weird music during the Olympics."

"Hey, that music was completely awesome. Their taps had sparks flyin' out of them."

"You totally couldn't understand a word they were singing!" She laughed. "How can you sing along to music like that?"

"Though the sparks were totally awesome," she did have to admit.

"Hey, sometimes there's music you sing along to with your mouth, and sometimes there's music you sing along to with you body."

"I never thought of it like that! It was the kind of music you'd hear in a disco!"

Priestly stared. "Dude. That was not disco music."

She laughed. "No, no. What do you call places you go just to dance and have fun but not with alcohol and stuff?"

". . . Clubs?"

"If they don't serve alcohol and teens can go, then that's the same thing! We called them discos in Tokyo City. I've only been a few times, but they're fun! And that's totally something they'd play. You know, just to dance to?"

"Well, I guess some of them are. There's all kinds of different kinds of 'em." Really? They called them 'discos'? "Do people wear white suits?"

She thought back. "Well, there are a few who wear crazy outfits? But people just usually wear whatever."

Priestly nodded, filing this away. ". . . Does the floor light up?"

Look, he was sort of fascinated now, okay?

"Well, sometimes. It depends on the song that's playing? But there's lots of laser lights and stuff! And a live DJ!" Ah! Now she wanted to go!

Priestly nodded. "Yeah, sounds like some of the clubs around here."

She stared. "There are disc... clubs on the island?!" How had she missed that?

"Uh." Priestly shrugged. "Not that I know of? But there's clubs in pretty much any big city in the country, as far as I know."
