3rd Floor CR, Friday Morning

Jack had arranged his week to have a three-day weekend for ease of travel back and forth to Baltimore. Of course, now that he wasn't visiting Baltimore so much, it meant he had a long chunk of dead time at the end of every week. It bothered him.

Today, he was trying to fill that time in the common room. There was some rerun on the television -- a wacky doctor show, full of adults acting like children in ways intended to be humorous -- but Jack's attention was on a chess board he'd pried free from the back of the storage shelves. He didn't play chess regularly, but he was decent enough to find it a good mental exercise.

He was playing himself. Right now, the black side seemed to be winning, but Jack saw a way for his white pieces to regain their advantage.

"When did you ever sneak up on my ass?" Jack demanded, halfway indignant. "And yes. I do. Even if something's dull, it's easier if you;re doing it for someone worth impressing, right?"

Which hadn't really been what she meant, but that was true enough too, and Rose nodded in agreement.

"Just you wait. It'll happen, and then you'll admit how right I am."

Rose smirked a little, amused at the idea. "So when's our time frame for this? Before graduation?"

"Sure," Jack decided. "That gives us two weeks, doesn't it? And if we don't manage it by then, we can call it a draw."

"Shit, two weeks?" she checked. "I don't even wanna think about that. Let's pretend it's not for like months still. Can it be January again?"

"We graduate two weekends from now," Jack confirmed. "But I wouldn't object to going back to January, either."

He eyed her. "Weren't we both absolutely convinced we'd barely last the year a year ago? We've gone soft."

"Hey, I thought I'd get kicked out again," Rose pointed out lightly. Or that she'd manage to get back to Lissa. "That's different."

"You thought you were going home on the day after your 18th birthday,"she replied with a little smile. "And, well, yeah. Wasn't much point in staying if I didn't have a chance to go back after."
