4th Floor Common Room, Wednesday Morning

Another day, another... session of staring at the TV while it played motorcross repeats from Precursors know when. Jak was getting bored again, which meant he was five minutes from heading back to Haven to yell at Torn and maybe get a mission out of it.

But that could come later.

Right now, it was motors. And a bag of chips. Jak was a simple man.

"Jonas!" Karla called, pleased to see him. "It's been awhile! What have you been up to, since I haven't been around much to push dyeing your tongue fun colors?"

"Hello, Karla," Jonas said, greeting her with a smile. "I've been well, for the most part. Beka's a dog so I've been taking care of her every once in awhile. Other than that, I've been attending classes and trying to get through my finals. Which I finally did."

"You're done?" Karla asked, returning his smile. "I have one more tomorrow. But my crazy hard one was yesterday, so I'm not too worried."

She vaguely remembered Emma mentioning Beka being a literal terrier. But that felt like weeks ago. "How long has she been a dog?" she asked. "A while now?"

"Well, I will be done," he clarified, nodding. "I've one more today but that's the entirety of them. I'll be free to do whatever I want...for about a week. And then I'll be looking forward to summer workshops."

Honestly, he looked forward to anything that was new. That shouldn't surprise anyone. "And she's been a dog for...over a week now, I think. She was a dog during prom, I'm sure. I didn't attend but I think her roommate took her."

"It's only fair if Emma did," Karla replied. "Beka took Emma to the Valentine's Day dance when Emma was an ermine. I guess it's one of those things that you do. Your roommate becomes an animal, you bring her to the dance. Sounds pretty fair."

Karla paused to chase a few more marshmallows around with her spoon and then asked, "Which final is today?"

"Defense Against the Dark Arts," he said, making a face at that. "I'm hopeful that it's nothing too...dark. I'd rather have a final that I can do rather than a final that frightens me."

"I'm pretty sure Dinah took that course last semester and thought it was fine," Karla offered. "She didn't come back with any horrible stories of what the final was like."

"I hope that's true," he said and smiled. "Which crazy exam did you have yesterday?"

"Two, actually," Karla said. "I had my Magical Ethics exam, which wasn't hard but I was worried about what it would be like, and then my Concepts of Law and Justice which I am devoutly glad I studied extra hard for. Plus last night was opening night for the play, which you should absolutely come see," she added, leaning over to give him a playful poke. "It's a good one."

"I will definitely come and see the next showing," he promised, nodding. "I apologize for missing the last one. I'd forgotten that it was occurring and I did have to study a bit for my final today. When's the next show so I can be in the front row?"

"Tomorrow night," Karla said cheerfully. "And it's completely okay. Finals are crazy times, don't worry, I know. But lots of people are in it: me, Dinah, Ender, Beka's roommate...So there will be plenty of people that you know."

"I don't know Beka's roommate that well," he admitted, shaking his head. "I mean, I know her name and I know she's very...distinguished but other than that, we haven't really met."

Jonas was kind of afraid of her.

Jonas was a wise lad.

"Emma's very nice," Karla said brightly. Then reconsidered. "Okay, not entirely. But if she likes you, there's no better friend you could ask for. But I know she likes Beka and since Beka likes you, Emma's at least positively inclined towards you, I'm sure. As long as she thinks you're good for Beka, she'll probably keep liking you."

That was sorta reassuring, right?

"I don't know if you're trying to convince me or yourself," Jonas said mildly, smiling slightly.

"Oh, definitely you," Karla said. "I think it's easier to understand Emma than to try to explain her--not that she'd appreciate anyone doing either, really." She paused for a moment, thinking. "There is a difference between someone who is 'good' and someone who is 'nice'. Nice is okay for casual acquaintances, but I'd far prefer my friends to be good people. Emma isn't nice. I highly doubt she ever has been and I doubt she ever will be. But she is good, regardless of how she might try to convince people otherwise."

"Is she impatient?" Jonas wondered, having a few reasons for asking that particular question.

Karla nodded. "Very. And temperamental. But then, I am, too, so I'm not in a good position to judge," she added, grinning.

"Hmm. Considering the amount of questions I tend to ask, I might just want to introduce myself and fade back into the shadows. It might prevent any major disagreements."

"I think Emma would understand why you were asking so many," Karla said thoughtfully. "She doesn't get mad at me when I ask a lot. Besides, like I said, Beka likes you, right? So Emma is already predisposed to liking you, I'm sure."

She leaned over to add, "It's entirely possible that you two won't get along. No one can like everyone. But I wouldn't borrow trouble before its time. Don't be so nervous that you miss out on making a friend."

She decided not to mention the part where Emma could sense fear and wouldn't scruple to use it for her own amusement. Even Karla could tell that would be counter-productive. "If nothing else, look at the people who like Emma. Generally, if you like and trust the people who like and trust her, there's not much to worry about."

Jonas nodded slowly before saying, "As of right now, it's mostly a moot point because who's to know if I'll ever meet her? I'm not nearly as social as most people and I'd be too afraid of bothering someone to just approach them and introduce myself."

Karla winked. "Well, you did promise to come to the show tomorrow night, right? You can probably meet her then. You can bring Beka along and tell Emma that Beka wanted to compliment her on a part well-acted." She chuckled. "I'm kidding about all that. I'm sure you'll meet her sometime, though. She's a friend of mine and Beka's roommate. I don't think you'll be able to escape her notice long."

"We'll see," he laughed, sounding slightly hesitant about meeting someone new but refusing to completely reject the idea. "I will be there and I'll bring Beka providing they allow small dogs in the theatre. I won't miss it, nervousness aside."

"It'll be fun," Karla promised. "I'm playing somebody's mother of all things. Afterwards, you can tell me how old I looked and make me cry."

"I'm not going to make you cry," he promised, making a face. "But, I will be there and I'll make sure I say hello once you're done with everything. I promise."

"I was teasing anyway, darling," Karla laughed. "As if someone could could make me cry by saying I look old! But I look forward to seeing you and saying hello anyway. I do hope you'll enjoy the play."
