Trouble with being six, rather than sixteen, was always going to start with the size problem. Mostly the height problem. Everything good always seemed to be kept just out of reach of small hands, and that included a decent breakfast.

Effy didn't really want to starve, but at the same time, there wasn't exactly anyone around to do it all for her.

So she was going to stand and stare up at the higher cupboards, like maybe she could make them relinquish the food in there with just the power of her mind.

Clearly it wasn't going very well.

"Nuh uh," she protested instantly. "If you're eighteen, you're all grown up. Why aren't you a guardian?"

Well. He didn't look like a Moroi anyway, and those were the only two choices.

"How do you know I'm not and I'm not just off duty?" Alex wondered, shrugging. "Don't guardians get days off too?"

"Aaaaaaaaaalex," Rose drew his name out, shaking her head. "Then you wouldn't be at school. DUH."

"What makes you think you're not at the wrong school, Rosemarie?" Alex wondered. "Maybe you're lost. Gotta check that sense of direction."

She frowned a little as she considered that. "How would I know if I was lost?"

"Aren't you supposed to be smart?" Alex quipped, smirking.

Rose stuck her tongue out at him. "No! I'm supposed to be strong."

"So, you're dumb?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow. "Got it, Rosemarie."

She was glaring now, and if Alex didn't move, there'd be a weetiny girl trying to kick him in the shin. "You're dumb, you bastard!"

"Ow, fuck!" Alex said, glaring down at the little stump of a girl. "Hey, I was just reiterating what you said. I asked if you were supposed to be smart and you said no!"

"What's riterating?" she asked, frowning up at him. "Just cause I don't care if I'm smart don't mean I'm dumb."

"It means repeating a fact," Alex told her, shaking his head. "Are you dumb?"

"Do I look dumb?" Rose challenged, her hands on her hips and her foot posed threateningly in case of a wrong answer.

"Answering a question with a question generally says that you don't know the answer to the first question," Alex said, sounding a little smug.

She tried to parse that out for a long moment. "...but grown ups do that all the time. Is that why?"

"Probably," Alex agreed, nodding. "You should start pointing that out to them. I'm sure they'll love it. Most adults I know are wrong."

"You looking to get something dropped on your head?" Alex wondered. "Because you're being an awful bitch."

Her eyes widened in protest. "You were the one that told me to say it!!"

"I'm not an adult." Well, he was but not in the way he was talking about. "I meant the old old old people. Not me, kid. You tell me I'm wrong, you're getting tossed in a lake."

Alex glared at her and then calmly went over, filled a glass with water and dumped it on her head.

She made a squincy face at the cold water drenching her hair and glared up at him. "That's not a lake!"

"Oops," Alex said, not sounding too bothered about that. "My mistake. Guess I am dumb, then."

"But you promised!" Rose argued indignantly. "You said you'd dump me in a lake. Please?"
