Third Floor Common Room [Saturday, Mid-morning]

Trouble with being six, rather than sixteen, was always going to start with the size problem. Mostly the height problem. Everything good always seemed to be kept just out of reach of small hands, and that included a decent breakfast.

Effy didn't really want to starve, but at the same time, there wasn't exactly anyone around to do it all for her.

So she was going to stand and stare up at the higher cupboards, like maybe she could make them relinquish the food in there with just the power of her mind.

Clearly it wasn't going very well.

Raven glanced up, noticing the chocolate chips. "You are going to put chocolate in the pancakes?" she asked curiously.

"Yeah, chocolate chips," Joan said. "Do you like chocolate?"

"Sweets are only to be enjoyed in moderation," Raven said. "Sometimes we dip strawberries in it."

"I promise I'll add a modest amount to the pancake batter then," Joan said.

"Thank you," Raven said. "I do like chocolate." She switched to a green crayon and began to carefully color in a flower stem, staying in the lines.

Joan started to mix up the batter, keeping a close eye on her friend.

"You're coloring that really well."

"Thank you," Raven said. "It is my first time."

"I never would have guessed," Joan said, encouraging her. "Maybe you can color one for me to hang up in my room?"

Raven nodded. "I will do that. Do you like flowers?"

"I do like flowers," Joan told her. "I work at the flower shop, you know."

"It is good you can find a profession that you enjoy," Raven said.
