Trouble with being six, rather than sixteen, was always going to start with the size problem. Mostly the height problem. Everything good always seemed to be kept just out of reach of small hands, and that included a decent breakfast.

Effy didn't really want to starve, but at the same time, there wasn't exactly anyone around to do it all for her.

So she was going to stand and stare up at the higher cupboards, like maybe she could make them relinquish the food in there with just the power of her mind.

Clearly it wasn't going very well.

"Yes, it is," Raven insisted. "And I know a great deal about it. What do you do?" Everyone had something they excelled at, but Raven hoped in Mat's case it wasn't "being contrary."

"I take care of horses," Mat said.

"I do not know how to tend animals," Raven said. "But you do. And I know all about cosmology, and you do not."

Because she was totes smarter.

"Because you made it up," Mat decided. "But everyone knows what a horse is."

The weetiny demon side of Raven was whispering that she should smite the stupid boy arguing with her, but she ignored it. "I have never ridden a horse," she said simply.

"I have my own horse," Mat said. "His name is Pips. I'm gonna take him for a walk tomorrow. You could come!"

"Will you promise not to be mean to me?" Raven asked.

Mat thought about it, then nodded.

"Thank you," Raven said. "Then I would like to see your horse."
