Raven was just a little nervous to start the reserves meeting. She'd gotten more used to speaking up in class, but talking in front of a group of people who were all looking at her was a different story. A gentle nudge from Karla had been necessary to get her to step forward and begin to speak.

"Many of us here -- not all, I know -- prefer to avoid the fighting for our own reasons," Raven said. "For instance, I am a pacifist, and as an empath, the emotions that arise during combat are often very uncomfortable for me. I will deal with such things when I must heal someone, but I do not belong in the front lines of combat.

"But for those who are engaged in a fight, whether magically or physically, it is best not to do so blindly. When something invades Fandom, we must find out everything about it so that we know how to best repel the attack, and that is where we can provide much needed support. Some of us have abilities to use various forms of divination, be it tarot cards or crystal balls or prophetic dreams. Others are skilled with a computer or are more at home with books, and may have access to information that the rest of us do not.

"Today we would like to talk about what abilities, either magical or mundane, each of us have for researching threats to Fandom. For instance, I sometimes have prophetic dreams of the future, but I know very little about computers. I am just beginning to learn to use one." Just wait 'til she found Rumor Gal fanfic.

Raven was there, of course, relieved she had survived public speaking.

Emmett was here ~~but on SP until later in the afternoon~~ and trying to decide if his mad skillz at finding free porn on the internet could be translated to anything more helpful. (And trying to imagine a situation on the island where being good at finding free porn could be helpful. It was frighteningly easy.)

Tim smiled at Karla. "Your uncle's an interesting guy."

Karla glanced up, startled at Tim. "You met him?" she asked. "This weekend?"

No, Karla. In a chatroom last Thursday. Duh!

"Is that interesting as in interesting, or interesting in you can't think a more polite adjective," she added, a bit suspiciously.

"Yeah, at the convention," Tim said. "Interesting interesting. Is he really fifty thousand years old?"

"He's probably rounding down to the nearest century," Karla said, completely serious, "but yes. Craziest part? He's not even the oldest person I can think of."

That dubious honor went to Draca. Not that Karla would be making an issue of her age anywhere near where the other female could hear.

"Wow," Tim said. "Do all your people live so long?"

Karla shook her head. "No, no. He's a Guardian--they're special. Most people die of old age at about a hundred twenty or thereabouts. Well, most people of the short-lived races, like me," she amended. "The long-lived races usually see about five thousand or so before they die."

One-twenty was closer to what he was used to. "What does he Guard?" Tim asked.

"Well, he is the High Lord of Hell," Karla pointed out, chuckling a bit. "One could say he's the Guardian of that Realm. But Guardians...they don't Guard, I think. I'm not quite sure where the title comes from, actually."

She made a mental note to ask Saetan the origin of the term later.

"I told him he should give you another chance to learn cooking," Tim said. "And I promised to eat something you cooked."

Karla smiled. "You did? Thank you! I baked some muffins!" she offered, pointing to a dozen slightly-charred lumps on the table. "I don't know which was the harder ingredient--buttermilk, because I had to make my own, or the jalapenos, because they were so damn spicy!"

She paused and added, "I had the oven on a leeetle too hot. If you scrape off the burned part, they should be good."

They were mostly burned-part.

"Jalepeño's an interesting choice," Tim said, taking a muffin and attempting to find a non-burned bit. "Where'd you come up with that idea?"

"YouknowI'mnotracistatallandnotthatmuchofanexceptionamongelvesbecauseofthatright?" Leda ~~babbled~~ ~~said~~ babbled. She'd basically been mentally rehearsing what to say for most of the meeting, and it all kind of came out jumbled.

Karla was trying to parse that.

"Buzzuh?"

Leda facepalmed. "Sorry. I just...Strider, one of my friends from back home just sent me a book on Elvish Law. And he wrote a little note saying he'd marked certain bits that I may want to try to change once I'm in charge. He said it gets pretty bad. I haven't looked yet, but I'm kinda scared of what I might find. I guess I just needed to...preemptively do damage control?"

"So later, when you come storming into my room to throw the book at me, I'll know that it's the work of a group of idiots and not indicative of elves in general?" Karla guessed, amused.

Leda smirked ruefully. She felt kinda silly now that she'd said it out loud. "Exactly. I mean, you've seen kinda the worst of Elves." Actually, she hadn't. Fear. "And I guess I'm afraid some of those laws will...fuck I don't know what I'm saying."

"Well, that's why you'll be fixing them, right?" Karla asked. "I can hardly take you to task for stupid laws you're actively trying to fix."

"And you won't hold it against the rest of us? Cause there's some really really cool Elves out there." And this was before she'd even read any of the shitty laws.

"I'll do my best not to," Karla said, lips twitching a bit. "Though I reserve the right to judge anyone I think is in favor of those laws."

"Oh that's fine. And if they approve too strenuously I might be doing some judging of my own."
