Raven was just a little nervous to start the reserves meeting. She'd gotten more used to speaking up in class, but talking in front of a group of people who were all looking at her was a different story. A gentle nudge from Karla had been necessary to get her to step forward and begin to speak.

"Many of us here -- not all, I know -- prefer to avoid the fighting for our own reasons," Raven said. "For instance, I am a pacifist, and as an empath, the emotions that arise during combat are often very uncomfortable for me. I will deal with such things when I must heal someone, but I do not belong in the front lines of combat.

"But for those who are engaged in a fight, whether magically or physically, it is best not to do so blindly. When something invades Fandom, we must find out everything about it so that we know how to best repel the attack, and that is where we can provide much needed support. Some of us have abilities to use various forms of divination, be it tarot cards or crystal balls or prophetic dreams. Others are skilled with a computer or are more at home with books, and may have access to information that the rest of us do not.

"Today we would like to talk about what abilities, either magical or mundane, each of us have for researching threats to Fandom. For instance, I sometimes have prophetic dreams of the future, but I know very little about computers. I am just beginning to learn to use one." Just wait 'til she found Rumor Gal fanfic.

Karla gave Peter a smile. "Kiss kiss," she said, tossing a cupcake in his direction. "Don't worry, I know why all the new faces show up."

Unlike the later muffin that was aimed for Peter, this pastry projectile was both welcome and caught in Peter's hands.

"Thanks," he said. "Interesting gathering of people. How many of you are supposed to do magic?"

He didn't accept magic at face value, but he was willing to accept 'magic' as the generally accepted term to describe their unique phenomena. It was a label, not an explanation.

Karla glanced around at the assembled. "At least a good half of us," she said with a smile. "Though most of our abilities differ. Tara and I are both witches, but the way she does magic and the way I do have nothing in common. Cassidy is a witch from my world, so she does magic like I do, though she can't do all the same things I can, because we share only one caste in common. Leda's an elf and Zack has these little balls called Materia that help him cast and the list just goes on from there."

She tilted her head to the side a bit. "What are your feelings on magic, Peter? Got any hidden magical talents to share?"

Peter thought for a moment, then held up his hands, palm forward. "Not much of a magic guy," he said. "But I'm more of an ear cleaner."

There was trickery afoot, of course.

Karla was more than willing to bite. "Ear cleaner?" she asked, eyebrow raised. "That sounds like a highly unflattering occupation."

It wasn't magic, just a simple bit of slight of hand. And really, the oldest trick in the book.

Peter reached over towards Karla's and said "Well, depends on what you're cleaning," he said.

He then produced a coin, seemingly from behind her ear.

"Some people leave all sorts of things in their ear."

Karla laughed at this, clapping. She'd seen the trick once before since coming to Fandom, but it still amused her. Sleight of hand was an underdeveloped skill in Kaeleer. "Are you saying my ears are that filthy?"

"Depends, who've you been hanging around?" Peter joked. "Because I understand filthy ears only really come from being around people with filthy mouths."

"Must be from last semester, when I had a class with Loki," Karla said, grinning from ear to ear. "Though there's always Emma as well. My language is, of course, impeccable."

"Emma Frost?" Peter asked, intrigued. He had Emma in his father's class, and she definitely intrigued him. "Are you impugning her honor?"

"Are you suggesting a lady's honor can be impugned by what she does with her mouth?" Karla asked, eyebrow arching upwards. "Guess which one of us Emma's likely to be angrier at?"

Karla had appeared to miss the part with the innuendo. She was bad at that.

Peter just choked down the laugh that wanted to burst free from his gut, but he couldn't resist the grin.

"If she's angry for me trying to stand up for her honor, well, I suppose I don't know what she does with that mouth."

He was so going to get a slap, if Emma found out.

Funny, it sounded much dirtier when Peter said it. Though Karla was thinking the same thing about the slap and didn't scruple to say so. "You ought to hope that I don't bear ta~ales," she said in a singsong, grinning impishly at Peter. "Emma will give you such a thwap if I do."

"I'm suddenly feeling like I've been set up for something awful," Peter joked. "Then again, I'm sure Emma's mouth has to be cleaner than Zack's magical balls."

Peter was just taking the piss, now, really.

"I wouldn't know much about them," Karla said, looking Very Innocent. "But if they're something you have experience with, I'd love to hear what you have to say."

Totally dirty, now. Even Karla wasn't that dense.

"I haven't even met the guy," Peter said. "So I'll have to say I'm not acquainted with how magical they are. I'm sure they work just fine, though."

"Oh, and here you sounded so knowledgeable," Karla chided with a smile. "I'm terribly disappointed now, to find out the decidedly unsordid truth."

"You know, I'm not even sure how we got to this point," Peter said. "Right, dirty ears. And I think we've settled that matter pretty well."

"I blame you entirely," Karla said, laughing again. "I brought up Zack's magic balls only in the context of scholarly interest."

"Perhaps you should write a paper on them," Peter said. "Examine them in great detail."

He could do this all day.

"I'm sure I could, but he's promised to give me a pair of my own one day," Karla said, smirking right back. "However, please don't let me stand in the way of your scholastic interests. Just be gentle, okay?"

Peter thought about saying he was more academically interested in Emma's mouth, but thought better of it.

"I suppose I'll have to start my magic studies somewhere," Peter said. "Why not start there?"

And he meant that genuinely, not euphemistically.

That was because Peter was indeed intelligent.

"Probably a good place to start," Karla said, nodding, sensing his sincerity. "Considering that anyone can use Materia when it's been equipped properly. I think Tara's magic is similar; there's no innate talent, just access to the right books, incantations, and ingredients."
