Peter didn't particularly want to gather a crowd, but making a campfire and tossing black snakes and firecrackers at it seemed particularly amusing today.

So yeah, there was definitely a bit of noise. Peter wasn't a blossoming pyro or anything, he was just a bored teenager. Anyone was definitely welcome to join him. He might even have some moddable extra bits of fireworks.

"I'd heard there'd been invasions," Peter said. "But everyone made them sound more like fantastical creatures than any sort of soldiers. I guess now I know to save the rest of the fireworks for July."

If there was going to be an admission of being in the wrong, Peter wasn't about to give it.

Kyle was used to someone not admitting they were wrong. He used to live with plenty of them. He wasn't pissed anymore, but in the interest of fair exposure, he kept talking. "Weapons aren't allowed on campus," Kyle explained. Technically not allowed. Technically. "But out here's a little shakier. You get the weird creature stuff, but some people come from places where they get shot at a lot."

"Like Detroit?" Peter joked, but realized it was in poor taste. That, at least, warranted a "Sorry," which he added quickly. "So what sort of peace offering do I need make, here?"

"For me? Nothing. But I'd appreciate a heads up if you're going to set off firecrackers again. You know, so I don't think we're under attack. I'm guessing you're not from somewhere people get shot at a lot?"

"Not really," Peter said. "I'd say I was from somewhere normal, but that'd be pretty egocentric of me. Not to mention unclear. Everybody's home universe is probably normal to them."

Kyle gave a non-committal nod and then shake of his head. "For most people. But good for you for not getting shot at." Hey, it was always cause for celebration.

Peter saved his egocentrics for when it counted. "And sorry to hear about your home war zone," he said. "Must make coming to school here almost seem like a comforting vacation."

"We're working on it," Kyle replied with confidence. "Here's pretty good. Hot running water, real beds, no one trying to kill you every day. Most days," he corrected. "The burgers at the diner are great." That was important to point out.

"Luke's, right?" Peter said. "I haven't had the chance to check that place out yet. The Mexican place was pretty good, the one time I went there. Not even Walter's choice of conversation topic could ruin the tacos."

"Yeah, Luke's. Lacey runs it, but I think it was named after the original owner. I haven't tried the tacos." He would now! "Who's Walter?"

"The Unblinded Science teacher," Peter said. "Who also happens to be my father."

The daddy issues just sort of oozed out of Peter like sap from a maple tree.

"You don't sound happy to have him around. My dad wasn't really good at conversations either."

"It was a bit of an unpleasant surprise to see him here," Peter said. "But so far it hasn't been as bad as I feared." Which was practically a compliment, given the circumstances. "Even being his TA has turned out relatively harmless, so far."

Apart from talking Walter out of live rodents being used in class activities.

"So far," Kyle repeated. "Expecting the worst?"

"The worst has happened before," Peter said. "I'd be amazed they're letting him teach, but I've already met the vice-principal."
