Main Campfire, Monday Evening

Okay, so today had admittedly not been the most productive day that Zack had ever had. He'd skipped work today after having the meaning of Memorial Day explained to him by the gym teacher, and then he'd ~~handwavily~~ headed down to the graveyard. Angeal wasn't there, no, but it was about as close as he was going to get, and the time to just sit quietly and pay his respects had been good for him.

Now, to wrap the day up, he'd grabbed some marshmallows, bars of chocolate, and graham crackers, and he was working on getting a decently sized fire going.

Okay, so Zack's idea of a 'decently sized' fire was possibly not what most sane people considered to be one. He'd heaped the logs on kind of ridiculously high, and then he'd lit that sucker with a Fira spell. The result had singed his eyebrows a little at first, but hey, all the better for making s'mores, right?

... Once he blew out the marshmallow fire.

Zack just gave Ino one of those grins. One of those grins that suggested that he was thinking of doing something really stupid.

"I bet gasoline would totally work."

"You shouldn't," she said, though she wasn't exactly going to disapprove if he did. "That'd be a waste of firewood."

"Who said anything about firewood?"

See, here was where the bad idea came in, right?

"I can just stand on the roof of one of the buildings and lob Fire at them as they start to dwindle."

...

Ino was just going to poke him in the side. "Bad puppy, no cookie."

If he was anyone else, she'd expected to get smacked here.

But Zack totally wasn't anyone else. Zack was Zack, and he was going to give Ino one heck of a pout, now.

"But I like cookies."

And, okay, fine. The pout was more because of the nickname than anything else. Cookies weren't hard to get when you were sitting next to a package of graham crackers.

He did make it hard to stand wrong and resist the pout, oh my yes.

So she looked away, grinning a silly little grin.

"Then I guess you'd better not light too many fires, mmm?"

"Guess not," Zack agreed, smiling crookedly once he smothered down the pout. "I wasn't a dalmation either time I turned into a puppy anyhow, so firefighting probably isn't my strongest point."

"What?"

How did that even come into--Ino didn't get it. Have a blank stare, Zack!

"Oh. Um..." Zack blinked, and then shrugged. "You see it in cartoon shows around here. Whenever there's a fire truck, they have one of those white dogs with all of the black spots on them. I think they're supposed to help."

Or else they were supposed to be cute and spotty. One of the two.

"Maybe they bring good luck," she teased him, because, uh, Ino doubted they were actually useful for much. "I think you're pretty nice luck overall--maybe you're a dalmatian or something at heart?"

"Maybe," Zack chuckled. "I think I'd prefer being a SOLDIER at heart, though. I'm kinda trying to live down the whole puppy thing."

He was not doing a very good job.

"I'm just teasing you," she assured him. "I don't think you're a puppy."

Much. Mostly.

This actually warranted a moment's pause and a curious glance, yes.

"Really? Everyone else kinda does."

Gods only knew why.

"Because that ignores too much else of what you are," she said simply, and smiled just for him.

"So... You think everyone who calls me a puppy is just not paying attention to the rest?"

Zack kind of had to get this straight, now.

"Nooo," she said slowly, "though it's possible. But I don't like the idea of... calling you one seriously 'cause you're more than that to me, even if it's--meant with care."

"It's a difficult nickname to swallow, sometimes," Zack admitted after a moment.

These were the things he'd never dare tell anyone else.

"Because of other people who used to use it."

So, he wouldn't mind if she just... snuggled up to him and snaked her arms around his waist, would he?

"I'm sorry," she said quietly.

He shook his head a bit, waving a hand dismissively before putting down his toasting stick and wrapping his arms around her, too.

"Don't be. There's nothing to be sorry for."

Ino wasn't really going to try and explain that, yes, she had felt that needed an apology when she'd just been using the name to needle him.

"You're too kind," she sighed, resting her head against him. "And warm."

Those two statements were not related. But she sounded happy about the second bit.

"Nah, that's mostly the fire," Zack replied, softly laughing as he pulled her a little closer. "It'd be pretty hard to be anything but warm when we've got that thing going."

... Well, it was true! Hardly romantic. But true!

"It's you too," she retorted mildly. "You don't get to argue 'bout that."

Oh, all will to argue was gone, now.

"Okay, but only if I get to say that you're warm, too."

So there!

She grinned into his chest and laughed softly.

"Miss you," she admitted quietly. "It's weird right now, in the cabins."

"It is," he agreed, leaning into her enough to be able to give her a little kiss on the top of her head. She smelled better than the smoke did, he noted. "Maybe we can go camping or something, to make up for it."
