Main campfire [Monday evening]

Ben still had a residual headache from the pounding music in Stark's earlier in the day, but he decided that it was nothing grilled sausages and marshmallows couldn't fix.

Besides, the weather was too nice out tonight to waste it by being indoors. Ben sat on a log next to the crackling fire, grilling a sausage with half his attention. The other half was focused on the stars.

It'd been too long since he'd flown.

"I'm surprised you haven't found a way to roast ice cream yet," Tahiri teased, coming out to sit beside him. "Unless that's what you're thinking about right now."

"Maybe some kind of protective coating," Ben mused, "but I think it would just make a mess. Hi, you."

"Hi," Tahiri said, leaning over to kiss him. "I still haven't found that nerf yet, by the way."

Firekeeper and Blind Seer had had a busy day in the preserve, and to show for it, they had two fat rabbits. Blind Seer had already eaten his share, and Firekeeper had contemplated having hers out in the woods as well before deciding that perhaps it would be best to do so at one of the campfires in an attempt to be social.

"Hello, Ben," she said, as she spotted a fire already going. "Is it possible to share your fire?"

"Hi, Firekeeper. Blind Seer," Tahiri greeted them enthusiastically. "Good hunting today?"

Firekeeper nodded. "Could have perhaps caught more," she admitted. "But, there is no real need to," she added with a shrug. "Enough to fill my belly, and perhaps to share with a few. Not too many here like rabbit."

"Please," Ben said. "Is that rabbit?"

She nodded. "And enough to share," she offered. "Since you share your fire."

Karla eyed the rabbits that Blysse and Blind Seer had brought. Mmmm...rabbit. That was something people around here didn't have often enough. Or at all, really. "I have some vegetables to share," she offered, after waving to both wolves. "I don't suppose I can convince you to trade a bit of rabbit for some?"

"Me, yes," Firekeeper nodded. "Blind Seer is not one for vegetable, but his belly is already full so he get no say," she teased her packmate, who just looked over at Karla and gave a long-suffering sigh. He was so hard done by.

Tim followed his nose out to the campfire where yummy things were cooking. "Whatever you're making smells awesome," he said.

"Sausage," Ben said, grinning. "So far, they haven't caught fire. I'm very pleased with myself. Want a few?"

"If you've got enough to spare," Tim said. He sat down on one of the logs and waved a hand. "I'm Tim, by the way."

Firekeeper looked up from where she was preparing her catch for roasting at the sound of the unfamiliar voice. Blind Seer, too, looked over with eyes that were definitely more alert and intelligent than your average canine.

"Hello. New student?" Firekeeper inquired, though she felt certain of the answer.

"Hi, I'm Tim," Tim said, waving a hand. "... is that a wolf?"

"Don't let him tell you he's a gourmet chef or anything," Tahiri cautioned playfully from her spot near Ben.

"Dude," Puck greeted Ben cheerfully, "do you have like, graham crackers and chocolate to go with the marshmallows? Because I've been told we're like, deficient unless we eat them all together. And I don't do things half-assedly."

Some people say 'hello,' Puck.

"Of course," Ben said, laughing. "I don't want to be run out of town by angry, s'mores-less people."

Tahiri was not often one of those people either, so that was okay.

"I take it that means you want some."

. . . she meant the marshmallows.

Karla was in a much better mood tonight at this campfire than she'd been last night. Today had been a good day, which made all the difference.

"Kiss kiss!" she called to everyone already at the campfire. "I come bearing gifts!"

The great thing about grocery stores? They sold vegetables already marinated and on skewers. All anyone needed to do was hold them over a grill or a fire and viola! Instant meal.

That Karla would find some way to ruin anyway.

"Are they terribly expensive gifts?" Ben asked.

"Do we have to earn them by promising we've been good?" Tahiri asked, waving at her.

Jaina hadn't been very social lately, and there were more people here than she'd counted on, but she wasn't exactly the type to avoid a crowd. Especially since she knew she had to get out now and then.

"I should have known you'd have food," she said, finding a seat.

Ben grinned at her. "And it's not ice cream," he said. "Be proud of me."

"Hey, Jaina," Tahiri called; she wasn't surprised about the lack of socialization, either. "Of course he has food. It might as well follow him wherever he goes."
