The Deck -- Late Saturday Morning

If you listened to radio, there were apparently certain... rumors going around that one Emma Grace Frost was 'Difficult.'

Which in no way, shape, or form, had influenced herself to throw on a white bikini and go lay out on the deck today. While diamond. Far be it from Emma to be that spiteful.

She was simply trying to relax enough to change back. Really. Seeing how many rainbows she could cause or freaking out her fellow classmates was simply a side-bonus.

It was whiplashy for her as well.

Ino wrinkled her nose at him as Zack licked her chin again. "I know," she muttered to Zack. "Quit fussing."

"It's Zack," Ino replied. "Tall, dark, giant-ass sword bearer."

Also: boyfriend.

"I don't know if I've met Zack but I don't have the sharpest of memories," he said, half smiling down at the dog.

"He looks pretty partial to you. I've only had to deal with a girl who turned into a cat and she mostly slept on me."

"We live together," she replied, curling her fingers in Zack's fur. "And he fusses. I haven't been able to get rid of him." Not that she'd tried very hard.

Zack's bark of indignation was still pretty funny to her though.

"The girl close to you, then, I'm guessing?"

"I guess you could call it that," he said, still reluctant to admit it even after all these months. "She doesn't hate me."

That made her smile. That was cute.

She doesn't hate me.

"Got it," Ino replied. "Kinda funny how they stick 'round like that when they're animals though, huh?"

"She insists she could have found anyone comfortable to sleep on," he recalled with a light laugh. "Giving me any kind of compliment would be a pain worse than death."

Mostly because he would never let her forget it. "I took a lot of pictures. It's fun to break those out when she's being a pain in the ass."

"I've got a few as well," she admitted. "But not too many--he'll just pout at me and I'll feel bad. I haven't even dug out the ribbons yet."

"Ribbons?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "That go over well when he's back to his normal self?"

"He'd pout a lot," Ino said, pretty sure of it, given the way that Zack was giving her soulful puppy eyes now. "And I ain't decided yet if it's worth it."

"I'd do it," Alex said, smirking. "It'd make me laugh and Id just blame him for turning into a dog and making it impossible to resist."

She made a face.

"Yeah," Ino said, "but he's already got a few things I'm probably goin' to get lectured for already when he's back to human."

Like the whole not talking for a week thing, yes.

"If I give him too much ammunition... that's not a good thing, I don't think."

"He'll retaliate?" Alex guessed with a raised eyebrow. "Put ribbons in your hair or something?"

"He'll make us discuss the other stuff," she said, sighing. "The stuff I don't want to deal with anyway."

"Ew, talking," Alex said, making a face at that. "Yeah, maybe avoid the ribbons then. No one wants to talk about shit that sucks, me included. Pointless waste of time to blah blah blah about shit that sucks."

"He might make me talk," she admitted. "I think he was heading that way before being turned into a dog. But the ribbons just give him more room to push for it."

"You can't just clam up and refuse?" Alex wondered. "I prefer the yelling and stalking off method myself. It seems to work."

And it pissed people off.

"Picture a puppy," Ino said, with a glance at the one in her lap. "Now, give that puppy the super power of making you feel like crap just by staring at you if you raise your voice. Multiply that by a million and you've got something vaguely approaching how Zack operates."

"Hey, obviously he's doing something right if it works on you," he said and laughed. "No one's come close to that for me. No puppies in my life."

Effy listened to him when he talked but she didn't really have puppy eyes or pouts or anything like that. She'd just stare unnervingly.

"I'd say I envy you," she said, with a sigh. "But most of the time I'm pretty happy with the one I've got--so."

"Hey, to each his own," Alex replied, shrugging. "I manage to make things work with whatever I've got at the time. Most of the time, I don't stick around long enough to require talking."

"Not this time though, huh?" She didn't really expect an answer to that. "Talkin' makes things complicated, it's true."

Alex didn't answer. He rolled his eyes which might have been an answer enough. "It does. I prefer the less talk, more touching way of life."

"That's fine 'till you get attached," she replied. "How unlucky."

Zack woofed and licked her chin.

Ino snickered.

"Attachment." Alex made a face again. "It's way overhyped."

Or maybe it wasn't.

"A lot of times it is," Ino said, ruffling Zack's poofy ears. "But I don't think so always."
