There was something decidedly unkingly about sitting on a couch in sweatpants, a t-shirt and socks while eating cereal and watching cartoons. That didn't stop Edmund. He'd been here far too long and was developing bad habits. Relaxing, comfortable, bad habits.

"You know, I'm not sure my mom would disagree with either of those statements."

"And since your mother is always right," he'd learned that was the best thing to go with over the last few months, "then I am as well."

Ellen was only right until Jo disagreed with her, then she was wrong, wrong, wrong.

"You're only supposed to say that if she's in the room." Lies, Ellen had spies everywhere.

"As I understand it, Mrs Harvelle is as tall as a giant, her glare can freeze a man solid and can read minds, so I'd just as soon say it anyway."

"Just how much time did you spent speaking with my dad?"

"He did most of the speaking," Edmund pointed out. "In between what I think was an intimidating stare rather than actually trying to kill me with fire from his eyes."

"Yeah, if he was trying to kill you he'd have used actual fire."

That might have been a joke. Might.

"I'm grateful he didn't attempt to kill me. That would have made dinner awkward."

"Just a bit," Jo agreed. "I'm grateful too."

"He painted quite the picture of your mother."

Jo smiled. "Yeah, well to hear her tell it, he started hitting on her the minute she drew a gun on him."

"Is that so much of a surprise?"

"Only to people who haven't met my mother."

"Do you miss seeing her every day?" he asked suddenly.

"More than I thought I would," Jo admitted. "Considering how hard I tried to get away from the roadhouse. Why?"

"No reason," he lied. "Though I wondered if going home was something you're looking forward to."

"A bit. It'll probably last a week before we get on each other's nerves again."

"What's your plan for when that happens?"

"I think I'm going to buy a truck. Start going on road-trips. Not even to hunt." At least until Ellen stopped having conniptions at the idea.

"Where do you want to go?"

"Anywhere that's not Nebraska."

"That's specific," he remarked. "Don't you want to go to Disneyland like the people on television?"

"I hear Disneyland's not much fun if you're going on your own."

"You could take the hunters on a field trip."

Jo chose not to dignify that with a reply. Beyond laughter that was.
