Farewell Slumber Party, 6th Floor, Wednesday Night

By now, Karla was used to throwing parties at school. The set-up was easy enough: lots of food, lots of drinks, lots of games and activities, lots of space. There were some streamers and balloons up, mostly because Karla was trying to remind everyone (or, at least, herself) that this was supposed to be a happy occasion.

Really. It was. At least, that's what everyone kept telling her.

The important thing to keep in mind was that there would (probably) be no repeat of her last sixth floor party ~~sadly~~. She had gone the safe an glitter-free route this time. Clad in her new pajamas, Karla waited for her guests to arrive.

"Skanky?"

Karla needed to watch more reality teevee.

"Cheap whore." Leda explained. At least that was her understanding of the word.

"Good decision to make the change, then," Karla said, dryly.

"I thought so. I like to think I've grown out of that phase."

"In Kaeleer, it's the lady's privilege to sleep with whom she likes, so long as he is willing," Karla said. "Though doing it for money is still generally frowned upon."

"What if it's the lady who's doing the paying?" Leda asked impishly.

"At a Red Moon House?" Karla asked. "Still dreadfully not done. As part of a contract for a Court? Right as rain."

Now Leda was interested in a less dirty amusing kind of way. "What's the difference between the two?" she asked curiously.

"There are several positions in Court where sex is part of the job description," Karla said. "A Consort serves his Queen as a lover--among other duties, of course--and several of the lower Circles might have males who are willing to accommodate visiting Queens or nobility in a sexual capacity. Because these count as duties to the Court, their stipend pays for those services."

It sounded like a 'it's okay cause we're royalty' thing to Leda, but she decided to reserve judgment. "Hmm...not sure I could get that passed in Faerie."

There was totally a difference.

Ish.

"No Consorts in Faerie?" Karla asked. "What does an unmarried Queen do, then?"

"I'm sure my trusty advisers will get around to telling me that soon." Leda said. They'd been kind of busy preparing her to fight for her life and beliefs against the folk that wanted her dead and the status quo to remain as is. "At the moment what she does is flirt with people in hopes of them flirting back. Or, okay so I'm still just a princess but same sort of deal. Which reminds me I have to tell you what happened when all our stuff turned human."

"Do you have some weird kind of 'marry for an alliance' thing going on?" Karla asked suspiciously. "If your advisors are trying to pull that stunt, you remind them you're not some kind of brood cow, okay?"

~~Mun has considered it~~ The first person who came to mind with that idea was the main villain, Corwyn himself. That idea both disgusted and terrified her. Witness the full body shiver.

"Yeah that will never happen." she said.

"If it does, you send those advisors to me, and I'll explain to them how to treat a Queen properly," Karla said. "And if they still don't get it, I'll send them to the boyos to learn."

Her eyes narrowed as her smile grew. "That'll teach them."

Leda was reletively sure that Wiseguy, Sai, and Strider would never condone such a thing. They were all rebels, like her. Leander on the other hand might, if he thought it best for the kingdom.

"I like this plan. So, tell me more about these boys who service visiting queens?"

Karla shrugged. "There's not much to say. They're usually younger members of the Court, perhaps in training to become proper Consorts. If a Queen without a full retinue comes for a visit, they're asked if they'd mind acting as her Escort for the duration of her visit. It's up to them whether they accept, of course. Because it is a duty for their Court, it is one of the things they get paid for."

"Your world is a strange and fascinating place." Leda said good naturedly.

"Said the shadow to the inkwell," Karla retorted with a smile.

"Hell I've barely begun to explore my world. Bordertown's strange enough for some people I suppose."

"Trust me," Karla said, nodding. "This whole world is weird."
