Farewell Slumber Party, 6th Floor, Wednesday Night

By now, Karla was used to throwing parties at school. The set-up was easy enough: lots of food, lots of drinks, lots of games and activities, lots of space. There were some streamers and balloons up, mostly because Karla was trying to remind everyone (or, at least, herself) that this was supposed to be a happy occasion.

Really. It was. At least, that's what everyone kept telling her.

The important thing to keep in mind was that there would (probably) be no repeat of her last sixth floor party ~~sadly~~. She had gone the safe an glitter-free route this time. Clad in her new pajamas, Karla waited for her guests to arrive.

"Be glad I consented to come at all," she replied, a bit snarkily. "Consider it a gift."

The gift of a grumpy older sister. At a party.

"I have extra sets in my room," Elena said. "Nice, boring ones. Not smutty ones like yours that you claim aren't for hot guys."

Hadn't dropped that yet, no.

"Because they're not for guys," she retorted. "And no, I am content to wear my suit."

She was here under duress. It was only right that she ignore the dress code.

"Turks are supposed to blend, you know," Elena observed, trying a different tack. "At a formal event, the suit's great. Here, you stand out like a sore thumb."

"I have no intentions of blending here," Rosalind informed her haughtily. "I had no intentions of coming. I came. Is that not enough?"

"You could act like it's not a chore," Elena suggested. "It's my last night here. Think of it as getting to spend time with me."

That had to mean something, didn't it?

"If you would cease bringing up my uniform," Rosalind said dryly, "I promise to attempt to enjoy myself."

In her own way.

And obviously getting to spend time with Elena meant something. She was here.

"Deal," Elena said instantly. She wasn't going to get another offer half that good, so she might as well snap it up. "You know, you can always ... come visit me. While I'm back home. If you don't mind things being all weird."

And if she could hide Rosalind from everyone who thought she was dead. That might be traumatic all the way around.

Rosalind arched her eyebrows.

"I do believe that might cause a few difficulties," she noted, and in an effort to keep from--hurting--her sister, continued with: "Though difficulties can be overcome."

In her own way, she was trying.

"Fuck the difficulties," Elena said firmly. "I miss you. Everything else can go to hell."

Elena was easier to understand when she came out and said things like 'I miss you' instead of being angry at the perceived rejection that wasn't even there.

"It's easy to say that," Rosalind replied, deliberately mild. "And I appreciate the sentiment." She did. "Nonetheless, I would prefer to approach any visitation in a logical manner."

"Then we'll take it logically," Elena said. "But don't let that ... keep you away. I could visit, instead."

Did she sound desperate? She probably sounded desperate. She hated that. That was why nine-year-old-her had always closed off and acted like she didn't give a damn.

"You will visit." And if that sounded like an order, well, perhaps the faint smile that came with it would help smooth that out. "And I will visit you. Do not fuss so."

"No fussing," Elena promised. If she were someone else, she would have hugged her sister. But she was still bad with affection, and awkward, and not sure how the other would respond.

Ridiculous. They were sisters and sometimes they were strangers, too.

"If I visit, can we gossip about boys? Mom said you need a social life."

Their mother hadn't said that exactly, but paraphrasing was good for the soul.

Rosalind arched her eyebrows in amusement.

"Mother can be content that I've been talked into book two of that dreadful series," Rosalind informed her. "I am sure she would count that as improvement."

Somehow.

"But if you insist, you may talk about boys."

She... had nothing to say on the topic. Deliberately.

"I'm trying to dial back the boys," she said, perfectly honestly. "Mom said I'm growing up."

Which was true, and which also neatly sidestepped a few thorny issues she'd rather not get into tonight.

"Is book two any better?"

"And yet," she said, amused despite herself, "you still wish to talk about them."

Sigh.

"I've not read much of it," Rosalind replied. "But it seems to have evened out a fair amount."

"They happen to be a fun topic," Elena teased lightly. "I have mystery books, by the way. If you wanted to borrow some."

They might be more interesting reading than ... whatever it was Rosalind was slogging through.

Or maybe Rosalind enjoyed the series and couldn't admit it.

"And give Jono a reason to cease reading the first?" Rosalind asked archly. "I think not."

... Also, book two was a lot more interesting.

"Once you've finished with the marvelous series that you can't pull yourself away from," Elena teased. "I wouldn't want to keep you from magical fairy-land."
