Fifth Floor Common Room; Monday Evening [ 09/20 ].

Sure, Ariel had said just streamers and a banner, but there were balloons now thrown into the mix because she couldn't help it. She and Ellie had gotten up all the decorations, which were all very pretty shades of green, based entirely on the fact that Ariel remembered that green was the color of the shirt she'd helped Chuck pick out. There was still an awful lot of flowers around, too, though who even knew where Ariel was getting them. The banner, meanwhile, was certainly not lacking in sparkle, stretched across the room:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHUCK!!!!!

So now there would just be the setting out of all the food and the drinks and ever important CAKE, then waiting for guests and the ever important BIRTHDAY BOY and it would be time to party!

"Thank you!" said Harper, pleased. She liked hearing compliments on her clothing. "I actually design my own clothes. This outfit is one of my favorites. It's really nice of you to throw a party for Chuck, by the way. I only just met him, but I knew I had to be here."

"Oh, when I found out all he was going to do was maybe have some cake, I felt it was practically my duty!" Ariel giggled a little. "And did you just meet him at the three minute dates? Weren't those just the most fun ever?"

"Yes, Chuck was one of my dates. I had a great time! And none of the boys I got paired up with tried to run away!" said Harper.

"...Did you think that they would?" asked Ariel, frowning slightly with worry, because if a boy tried to run away from her on a date? Oh, man. There's be trouble.

"I've had it happen to me before," said Harper, her smile fading.

Of course, Justin Russo wasn't exactly a date, and he ran away because he thought Harper was stalking him... But that was all ancient history.

"Oh, but that's terrible!" Ariel said, wide-eyed. "What did you do?"

"I decided that absence makes the heart grow fonder, so I transferred to Fandom High to give him a chance to miss me," said Harper.

"...How'd that work out?" asked Ariel, terribly curious now because she admitted, she kind of liked Harper's thinking there. Especially if it actually worked. It made her wonder if now, what she should really do, is try to be all aloof and everything around Bruce, because she really had no idea.

"Well..."

Truthfully, it hadn't worked, because on her recent trip to stay with the Russo family, everyone had dropped little hints about Justin and his latest girlfriend.

"Actually, I ended up meeting another guy while I was in Fandom," said Harper, doing some creative thinking. "We had this epic whirlwind romance but then he suddenly had to return home. It happened so fast that he didn't even get a chance to say good-bye to me. So I told Justin that he might as well move on, because it wasn't fair to him to keep waiting for me when my heart belonged to another."

And Ariel bought it, hook, like, and sinker.

"Ohmygosh, really?" she gasped. "That's so romantic! Who was it? What was his name? Did he leave before summer? Do you think he'll ever come back? Does it just about kill you every day having to be away from him?"

That's how she would totally feel about Bruce right now if that happened to her, ohmygosh.

"It was all so tragic," said Harper with a dramatic sigh. "His name was Eric, and he picked up and left right in the middle of the fall semester last year. I think it was some sort of emergency. It was horrible, but with time, I've learned to move on with my life."

In reality, Eric was gay and made it very clear that he was not interesting in Harper.

Ariel's bobbed. "That's so brave of you," she said. "Truly. Have you moved on enough to have your eye on someone else, or do you think you need more time?"

"I've had so much time. I think I am finally ready to move on," said Harper.

Ariel's head bobbed in a supportive nod before getting to what any girl would want to know. "On to anyone in particular?"

"Not yet. I think I'll just enjoy taking my time, getting to know different boys," said Harper. She'd also learned her lesson. Next time, she was going to make sure that the boy liked girls before she fell for him.

"That's a really good strategy," Ariel said with a tone of agreement. "That's been my approach to things, definitely, especially with so many great guys here to meet. I mean, my friend Rinoa, she has a sort-of boyfriend, Squall, and so, really, she's restricted to just him, and he's kind of a wet blanket, and it makes me wonder why she doesn't wonder if maybe someone else might be better. I mean, Squall is cute and she seems to really love him, but still."

"I'm sure it would be easy to stick to just one guy if you really, really loved him, but that's not the position I'm in at the moment," said Harper.

"Yeah, I think it takes a lot to probably get to that point," said Ariel.

Or maybe just saving someone from drowning, but she, at this juncture, wouldn't know anything about that.

"I do think Eric is a great name, though," she felt herself oddly compelled to mention.

"It is a really nice name," said Harper. "He really was so sweet." At least he was before he started screaming at Harper to stay away from him.

"Well, I wouldn't expect you to like him if he wasn't," said Ariel.

"Wait, no," she amended. "I take that back. Squall factor again. Although he did let me hug him last night, that was kind of sweet. Maybe he's just a bad boy with a sweet guy interior deep down, and that's why Rinoa likes him."

"There's something reckless and exciting about dating a bad boy," said Harper. "Not that I know that from experience. I guess I've just seen too many movies about bad boys."
