The Pool; Thursday Evening [ 11/18 ] -- POOL PARTY!!!

It was finally Thursday! It was finally party time!

And Ariel, not wanting to be a disappointment in carrying the tradition of Atlantican parties onto the land, had gone all out, showing up at the pool as soon as she was finished with Glee Club to get everything set and ready for when the party was going to start. The decorations were slightly insane, and had been...an interesting challenge to put up, but Ariel had managed without falling into the pool too much. And off in an area where the splashing was unlikely to spoil anything, she'd set up a food table with all of her favorite human foods (she was going to do some Atlantican ones, but she'd have to make them herself, and no one wanted that) and a dance floor with a DJ booth for Jono.

How she got all this down here and up was just going to wind up being one of those great mysteries of life, but she knew that hard work and perseverance and obsessive planning had really paid off.

But, of course, it'd be nothing without guests.

[[ yay party! OCD is on the way up, huzzah! Everyone got a personal invitation, so come on in, the water's fine! ]]

Faramir smiled a little in amusement, but he understood Jonothon's point very well. "You are right, of course. My brother would have a similar philosophy, only he would be speaking of his blade rather than a musical instrument."

//A swordsman, is he?// Jono managed to look somewhat intrigued by that prospect, yes. //I've never handled a sword myself, but I've got a fair bit of respect for those that can.//

Unless they were aiming it at him. And then all bets were off.

"It is a required skill," Faramir said, "but there are very few who handle a sword better than him. Is it something you would wish to learn?"

//I'd be lying if I said I wasn't perhaps a little intrigued,// Jonothon admitted, //though it would be more for th'novelty for me, back home. Not very many people can get away with running about with a sword, please of all people like me.//

You know. Mu... sicians.

"I have noticed that it tends to draw attention once you leave the island," Faramir admitted. Then again, it could have been both the horse, the cloak and the bow that had made people stare. "Though none tried to stop me, they did use their cameras."
furnaceface: (Told you so)

//They must think yer some sort of showman, then,// Jono mused. //I have my doubts that they believe yer sword is even real, mate.//

He meant that in the nicest way, honest!

"It most certainly is!" Faramir objected before he started laughing. "And now I sound like my brother, but I assure you that I have a very good blade. The sons of the Steward are well armed."

//Oh, no, no, I don't doubt it.// Jonothon couldn't even hide the hint of a grin that threatened to show in his eyes. Everyone needed something to be proud of, indeed. //But generally, on th'mainland, they've got... means of controlling how many actual weapons are wandering about. Licences and such. I'd be careful walking about with it off-island, mate. They might try to take it from you.//

"Then it would appear that I had fortune on my side so far," Faramir was frowning at the thought of something trying to take his weapons. He was not his brother, but he certainly did not approve.

"That seems a hard rule to maintain. Do they offer escorts then to travellers? I would think that even here the roads can be dangerous."

For once, Jono was actually at a loss as to how to explain this one.

//There's... an entire legal system,// he replied. //People charged to protect those who otherwise can't protect themselves. They don't have to be everywhere at once, they just have to be good enough to figure out who broke which rules. Generally, it works. Most people don't want to get caught. Those who don't care tend to get caught quickly enough.//

Well, in an ideal world. He was leaving out the whole second-class citizen thing that his world had mixed in, wherever mutants were concerned.

"Perhaps I will have to find some books on it," Faramir mused.

"We have guards to protect the people as well, but it will not forbid a farmer from picking up a sword. It seems to me that some crimes could have been prevented instead of being forced to find the culprit when the harm has been done."

Faramir was not very good at picking appropriate party topics.

Well, in all fairness, he was talking to the guy who was staying as far from the pool as possible. It was likely that Jono was just the right person to talk about things that weren't very party-appropriate with.

//It would seem so, wouldn't it?// He couldn't argue, exactly. You couldn't try a person for a law that hadn't been broken yet. //I don't presume to understand how it all works around here. I'm not American, and my world has a few notable differences beyond that.//

Faramir did not seem to mind staying away from the water at least. It was perhaps a good thing as his idea of swimming involved a whole lack of clothing.

Instead, he did not mind letting Jonothon distract him, eager to learn as much as he could. "And what sort of differences are there in your world?"

Well, Jono had gone and stuck his foot into that one all on his own, hadn't he?

//They're fairly subtle,// he noted, after a moment. //Slightly more advanced technology. Contact with extraterrestrials. People with supernatural abilities beyond what a normal human might be able to manage. Gods. Demons...//

Really, the more he listed off, the less subtle the differences seemed. Huh.

Faramir blinked slowly, but then he should not be entirely surprised. Not when the man beside him was explaining these matters as a voice in his own mind.

"And where would you place yourself? I know that you are not a demon, and I do not think you are a god either."

Re: Dance! -- 11/18.

[personal profile] furnaceface 2010-11-18 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no, Jono was neither. Though he was descended from a mutant who would happily proclaim himself to be a god. And who had gotten away with doing so for many, many eons.

//Just a man,// he replied, shaking his head a bit. //Perhaps a bit different from most, but... If it's up to me to place myself, then I'm simply a man.//

Now, if someone else were to place him, they might have other words to say about that.

"I did not mean to imply a lacking of humanity," Faramir said instantly, worried that he had offended. "I do not think for a second that you and I are so very much different when it comes to heart and mind. Yet, you have abilities that are impossible for me to obtain."

//You wouldn't want to,// came Jonothon's voice, calm and level. //All things have their price, whether or not you ask for them. This is no different.//
