Second Floor Common Room, Friday Morning

It had been a thankfully calm and uneventful week for once. Ender knew better than to hope that would continue, though he wasn't so bound by superstition that he feared acknowledging it aloud. However, not exactly being the type to talk to himself, he didn't anyway-- instead he was doing so by moving into the common room without his laptop this time.

He was going to check out if the History Channel was showing something interesting instead.

Yes. Exciting.

He had a bowl full of cereal and a glass of milk, and he was going to spend this morning doing the closest thing to relaxing he ever did. Well. Second-closest. He'd already gone through his morning exercise schedule.

...

Nerd.

"Could be that the cook just wasn't good at it," she teased lightly. "You'd likely get sick off of my cooking, at least."

"She was also Romanian so the food was ethnic as well," Bod shared though he did wonder just how good a cook Miss Lupescu was. That stew had been atrocious. "You didn't have any problems adjusting to the food here when you arrived?"

"The richness of it," Katniss replied thoughtfully. "And the sheer quantity. I still have trouble restraining myself so I don't get sick. That was my problem in Panem's Capitol, too -- the food was much richer and heavier and there was more of it than anything I'd ever known before, and it's hard to say no to that kind of luxury."

"I can definitely understand that." He hadn't had that problem simply because Silas had kept him well fed but he could definitely understand an adjustment that radical.

"Have you found something new that you really like?" he asked. "There's so much variety and selection here that I've made it a point to try different things when I can."

"Those little yellow cakes with the cream in the middle," she said immediately. "We don't have anything like that at home. Even in the Capitol."

Go figure. Katniss loved Twinkies.

"Twinkies!" It was hard to forget something like that even if he wasn't much a fan of those. "I've had those before. There interesting. Have you ever had a moon pie? You might like those too."

Chocolate was a weakness.

"What's a moon pie?" Katniss asked, immediately intrigued. "Are they like ding-dongs? Or ho-hos? I like those too."

"I think so," Bod said, holding out a hand, palm up. "It's circular, about the size of my palm and it's graham cracker cookies that are dipped in chocolate with marshmallow in the middle. Very sweet but very good. I think ding dongs might be similar slightly."

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Marshmallow like in s'mores?" she asked, eyes wide.

[personal profile] therewaslife 2011-03-04 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Exactly!" Bod said, nodding. "It's not quite as gooey though since it's not heated up but the marshmallow and chocolate flavor is exactly like a s'more. I like those too."

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"I bet we could heat up moon pies and it'd be like a s'more," Katniss said thoughtfully.

"I've never tried," he admitted but he did sound interested. "We could make a mess...but that might be even more fun."

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"We would need to be sure not to create waste," she said, ever pragmatic, especially about food. "If it melted everywhere, we wouldn't be able to eat it."

[personal profile] therewaslife 2011-03-04 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm." Bod thought about it for a moment. "Perhaps via a hot plate? It's an open heat source so we could make sure that whatever might drip could be caught on plates or napkins and not be wasted."

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Like a pan?" she asked curiously. "It'll remain flat?"
therewaslife: (→ | funny face)

[personal profile] therewaslife 2011-03-04 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Exactly," Bod said, nodding. "We plug it in and then place the moon pie on a plate on top of it. It heats the plate up and should heat the moon pie up with it. It might take a few minutes but it will get warm and gooey."

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Like a grilled sandwich," she said, nodding. "We'd have to monitor it so it doesn't melt all over everything."
therewaslife: (↑ | sweet)

[personal profile] therewaslife 2011-03-04 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course," he agreed. "I think if we just monitored it to make sure it didn't get too hot, any melting would end up on the plate and it would be minimal. And we could always use our fingers to scoop up the melted chocolate."
