Second Floor Common Room, Friday Morning

It had been a thankfully calm and uneventful week for once. Ender knew better than to hope that would continue, though he wasn't so bound by superstition that he feared acknowledging it aloud. However, not exactly being the type to talk to himself, he didn't anyway-- instead he was doing so by moving into the common room without his laptop this time.

He was going to check out if the History Channel was showing something interesting instead.

Yes. Exciting.

He had a bowl full of cereal and a glass of milk, and he was going to spend this morning doing the closest thing to relaxing he ever did. Well. Second-closest. He'd already gone through his morning exercise schedule.

...

Nerd.

Other than going into work later, Bod had nothing else to do for the day. After reading in his room for a bit, he'd wandered downstairs several floors and stopped when he spotted Ender in the common room.

"Good morning," he greeted, stepping inside quietly. "How are things this Friday, Ender?"

"Quiet as well," he said, finding a place to sit so he could stretch out his legs. "I've to work a little later so I'm taking some of that quiet time and using it to get out of my room. It's far too easy to just stay in there."

Katniss was pink-cheeked from the cold this morning when she ducked into the common room, after a piece of fruit or some juice to nourish her after spending her early hours practicing her aim on squirrels.

"What are you watching?" she asked with interest, peering over at the television as she made her way into the kitchen.

"Ancient Greece," Katniss repeated interestedly, grabbing an apple before emerging again. "Is it about the wars themselves, or technique?"

She knew a little more about Rome than Greece, but from what she could tell, this could be helpful learning.

"Hullo there, Katniss," Bod greeted, giving a little wave. "You look like you've been up for awhile already."

"The woods are more interesting before other people have gone out there, most mornings," she replied with a quick little smile. "Humans seem to be the only creatures that willingly sleep past dawn."

"I sleep that late rarely but I don't always make it outside if I am awake," he admitted, nodding. "I like to sit and think or sit and read. Anything interesting in the woods this morning?"

"Hi," Tara said, as she started rummaging through the cabinets for some oatmeal. "... oh, is this one of the ones about World War II?"

It was always one of the ones about World War II, as far as she could tell. But then, she didn't exactly watch the History channel a lot.

"Oh, good," Tara said. "I like ancient Greece."

More goddesses, fewer tanks; of course it was Tara's preference.

"Hey," she added. "So is today the start of your weekend, too?"

"Which one is World War II?" Katniss checked. "They all run together for me."

Mostly due to poor education and the fact that it was basically ancient history, to her.

"The one about seventy years ago," Tara said, weighing what more she should say about it. Hitler wasn't exactly pre-breakfast conversation. "It was England and America against Germany and Japan, kind of?"

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"I get it mixed up with the first one, since there's so many of the same countries," she admitted. The third was a little easier to remember, having happened recently enough that there was still oral tradition in Panem to support it. "We're not really big on history education where I'm from."

She raised her eyebrows. "How about you?"

Gabrielle couldn't hide out forever, and she'd at some point early this morning decided it would do her some good to get in touch with people again.

She still looked as if she hadn't been sleeping much, and was quieter and more sober than people might be used to seeing her act, but she was trying her best as she ventured into the common room and glanced at the TV.

"Oh, is the History Channel doing another one of those specials? They always get so much wrong."

. . . only by the standards of your world, Gabrielle.

[OOC: I HAD TO.]

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"The last time I saw a special about the Amazons, I nearly threw things at the TV." Gabrielle scowled, then leaned forward to squint at the screen, oblivious to the fact that she was on the completely wrong side of the anachronism when she commented as an aside, "I've never seen anyone use that kind of sword -- right, Amazons. Everything they were describing? My tribe would never do that."

And the best friend you're currently not speaking to has stirrups on her horse's riding gear, so stop it, Gabrielle.

[identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"This is wrong?" Katniss asked, perking up interestedly. "Is it because the victors get to color their story?"

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've heard people say that, and the more I learn about it in this time, the more I think it's true." Gabrielle gave the TV an exasperated glare. Ordinarily here she'd take the opportunity to go on a rant about how Xena never got into any of the stories, but oddly that was still a sore subject, and the rant went . . . un-ranted-about. "And if any of the bards and historians I know are any indication, none of them were actually in any of these battles anyhow. Ha -- as if they really had any idea what it sounds like in the middle of all of that. If they did it wouldn't sound half as glorious."

Apparently she'd had a mini-rant in her anyway; it was just a little more cynical than normal.
