Second Floor Common Room, Friday Morning

It had been a thankfully calm and uneventful week for once. Ender knew better than to hope that would continue, though he wasn't so bound by superstition that he feared acknowledging it aloud. However, not exactly being the type to talk to himself, he didn't anyway-- instead he was doing so by moving into the common room without his laptop this time.

He was going to check out if the History Channel was showing something interesting instead.

Yes. Exciting.

He had a bowl full of cereal and a glass of milk, and he was going to spend this morning doing the closest thing to relaxing he ever did. Well. Second-closest. He'd already gone through his morning exercise schedule.

...

Nerd.

"I get that," Tara nodded. "I work at the magic shop? And I did that because ... it's just really neat to be surrounded by all the witchcraft stuff, and I'm learning something just through, you know, seeing what other people buy, things like that."

"I know a witch," he said, grinning at the thought of Liza. "It sounds like it's been quite helpful, your job. So, you're constantly learning new things every time you go to work?"

"You probably know more than one of us," Tara smiled back at him. There were a lot of magic users in Fandom; it was a safe guess. "And most weeks, yeah. Sometimes it's just keeping things clean and stocked, but ... there's usually at least a little time to read."

"I probably do," he agreed with a little smile. "I knew a witch back home. I stole her a headstone because witches back in her time weren't allowed to have them. I didn't understand that but I thought it wrong."

Tara frowned a bit at the story, both in indignation and because she found the timeline difficult to follow. "So ... she was already buried when you met her?" she asked gingerly. "A ghost witch? But that was an incredible thing to do. I bet she was grateful."

"All of the people who raised me were buried before I met them," he explained easily. "They were all ghosts and they lived in the graveyard where I was raised. She was buried away from all the other ghosts because witches from her time were seen as...they weren't accepted as openly then as they are here."

"It's still like that in a lot of places," Tara said. "It's ... I guess people don't like things they don't understand. But that's sad, that your friend's grave was all on its own."

"She's got a headstone now," he said, smiling. "So, she's a little less alone. I hope it's helping. She deserves it. It's saddening to hear that not everyone is as open minded as people here are though. They're just missing out."
