Really, it probably should have been a shock to wake up in a room you hadn't even seen for nearly twenty years. And yes, it had been a little disorienting at first, but please. Not only was Kate Desrosiers a Fandom High alumna, she had also taught at the school herself, and had visited pretty frequently over the years since. There were few strange occurrences that could shock her anymore.

So really, all this randomly-getting-transported-overnight stuff really meant at this point was that she was saving money on gas for her car.

Having rolled out of bed and boggled at her old room for a moment, Kate did what came naturally. And that was wandering on down to the common room, getting the coffee machine going, and getting started on a batch of muffins. If memory served her right, the smell would be enough to lure people in. She was kind of curious as to who all she'd see.

And if there was anyone in particular she was hoping to run into... Well, you would not be the first to know.

Peter let out a sad, half-chuckle. "For given values of the term 'good'," he said. "World is still in one piece, mainly."

Claudia knew how much work that could take and nodded. "I hear ya. You got someone in your life, these days, or still living fancy free?"

Even Peter couldn't cover up the wince that came over him. "Not right now, no," he said. "Had some... fun and unexpected events of late."

Yeah, that 'fun' was dripping with sarcasm.

"But I have been staying in one place,for the past couple years. That's a new thing for me."

Claudia made a mental note that she wasn't going to broach that topic again. "Yeah? I had my money on you chilling in Azerbaijan by now or something."

"Boston," Peter said. "Helping a special FBI unit with their more... peculiar cases. Though the ego bruising is that they originally only came to me so that someone could bring my father out of the institution he was in."

"What, did he blow up too many papayas?" That was pretty much the only one of Walter Bishop's classes that had stuck in Claudia's head. It was the friendliest of fruits!

"My father was in a mental institution for... well, for reasons I still don't know the full depth or reasons," Peter said. "And believe me, I wish it was just for blowing up papayas."

It was Claudia's turn to wince. "Eesh, sorry. I'm just the queen of bringing up awkward topics, this morning."

"Oh, that's not awkward," Peter said. "My father's depth of mistakes is not something personally embarrassing to me. That's something I feel more vindicated about than anything. Even if we are forming something of an actual father-son bond, now."

"Oh. Well, good for you guys, then. I think I remember kinda liking the guy, for the brief time he was here."

"He's something else," Peter said. Even if technically he wasn't Peter's father. "And he's definitely out to redeem himself. And really... we all make mistakes. His just involved child experimentation and... tampering with the fabric of reality."

"Man, I hate it when people do that." She wasn't being facetious. She'd seen it happen before. "People do some weird-ass crap, don't they?"

"No kidding," Peter said. "I wish I could tell you about half of the things I've seen in the past two years. It makes Fandom look like a walk in the park."

"I bet we could go toe to toe on that front. I, for one, haven't been able to look at classic sci-fi the same way in years."

"Toe to toe on conversations we can't have," Peter said. "Now there's a horrible way to pass the time."

"I dunno, we could reach new heights of vague references and outright lies. I've been practicing."

"Practicing? I hope this isn't you holding practice conversations with your mirror," Peter said, joking.

"I myself have... okay, the people I talk to on a regular basis are all in the know for this sort of thing, actually."

"Nope, no mirror. Just the local town. Of course, that usually also involved a lot of hurled curses, too." Stupid IRS cover story. Why they couldn't just be the Secret Service. . . .

"What, do you pretend you're a TSA Agent?" Peter joked.

"No, thank god. I don't need 'bad touch' shouting along with the 'you're stealing our hard earned cash!'"

Peter chuckled. "So... IRS? State collections? Whatever it is, probably not the most fun cover to have. I wouldn't eat at the local fast food joints."
