Third Floor Common Room, Sunday Afternoon

After a somewhat stressful week, Kate had actually managed to have a pretty pleasant weekend. (A handwavy one-month anniversary could do that to a girl.) She was relaxed and something approaching happy, so today was the perfect day to devote to third floor party planning. Which was good since, you know, she hadn't actually done a lot of it yet. She'd decided the date would be next Friday, sure, but other than that... She had ideas. They just hadn't quite come together yet.

So she was in the common room, absently eating candy while sitting on a couch with her feet propped up on the edge of a coffee table and her MacBook in her lap. In no way waiting to pounce on innocent passers-by to pester them for ideas. No sir.

Perhaps Bod wasn't the definitive innocent passerby considering he knew about her idea but he was passing by anyway and couldn't help stopping when he spotted Kate lazily sitting in the common room.

"Hullo," he greeted, leaning in the doorway. "You look hard at work."

"That's because I am," Kate replied, nodding solemnly at the screen. "This is totally hard work." She looked his way, quirked a little smile. "Hullo."

"Hullo," he said again, making himself sound solemn as well. "Should I leave you to it then? I wouldn't want to interrupt."

"Oh, no," she replied, beckoning him closer with a lazy gesture of her hand. "You should come in and share my workload. Team effort."

"What are you working on anyway?" Bod asked, slipping into the common room and taking a seat beside her. "Have you been given homework already?"

Kate snorted. "I'm not even taking any classes," she pointed out. "Well, except for the evening one at the community center, but I don't think it counts. I'm party planning, come on."

"That's what I meant, the evening class," Bod pointed out, shrugging. "I heard that you'd attended on the radio. I wasn't sure if they differed from regular classes or not."

He looked over at her and then added, "You're old."

Kate laughed as she raised an eyebrow at him. "What? That seems like an awfully random thing to say."

He'd mostly been teasing her and now couldn't help laughing at her reaction. "Well, you're no longer in high school and I am. You're old. You're the older woman."

"I think we established that back when we noted your possibly fake birthday is exactly a month after mine," she replied, reaching over to flick him on the nose for laughing. Gently. "I am."

"And I just thought I'd remind you of that," he said and rubbed his nose, "since it delighted you when you discovered it to be true."

"I do think it's kind of an amusing idea," she admitted. "If I actually was old, it'd be lame but now it's just... I don't know."

"It's just something you can tease me with," he decided, snickering. "How is your party planning progressing?"

Dave was just innocently passing by the common room on his way back from the Perk when he glanced inside and spotted a couple people. After an initial thought of 'I hope nobody's offended that this is non-third floor coffee I'm drinking,' he decided to go in.

"Hi," he said. "Working on something?"

"Party plans for next Friday," Kate replied before looking up and shooting him a brief smile. "Hi, Dave, right?"

"Got it in one," Dave said, raising his coffee in celebration. And then realizing that probably looked kind of silly. "What's the party for?"

"Third floor." She'd swear she wasn't just completely obsessed with it, really. "And also, just a chance to meet new people, I mean, it's not gonna be restricted to people from this floor or anything."

"Oh, so it's just celebrating our general greatness and giving other people a chance to recognize it too," Dave said, catching on quickly.

"Exactly," Kate nodded, pleased that he wasn't having trouble with her train of thought. "I mean, what better way to show everyone we're awesome than by throwing an awesome party?"

"Monetary bribes might work, but that gets expensive," Dave mused.

"Yeah, even I don't have quite that much of an attachment to this floor," Kate snorted. "Bribes of chocolate and cheap Viking booze I can do, but I draw the line at actually throwing my money at people."

Especially since she barely had any.

"Is that going to be the theme of the party? Chocolate and Viking booze?" Dave asked. "I have a feeling that would actually work out pretty well."

"At this rate, it might be," Kate admitted, glancing at her laptop screen. "An implicit theme, maybe. Except light on chocolate and heavy on the booze."

"That's probably the way most people would prefer it," Dave said. And then he thought about it a little more. "Can we actually get away with having booze in here?"

Dave still had so much to learn.

"Well, my boyfriend seems to think that no, not really," Kate allowed, then shrugged a shoulder. "Personally, I'm not convinced we wouldn't."
