The Deck ; Tuesday Evening

So, they were in Egypt now. Right, Sam was just going to stop trying to make sense of this magically moving island and it's time traveling ways. He wasn't even going to try explaining it to Ramon and Frank because all he'd get were blank looks and concern that was finally cracking up after everything that had happened the past few months.

Yeah, Sam was just going to keep the nature of the island to himself. It was bad enough Ashley and Brooke could pop up at anytime and pester him until he explained. That was more Brooke than Ashley since Ashley's patience wasn't that long.

The good thing about Egypt was that the weather had warmed up a lot and now he could sit outside on the deck with his feet propped up in front of him. His skateboard was underneath his chair and was getting a break after Sam had ridden it all through town earlier. It wasn't running but maybe he was working up to that.

It was just taking him awhile. Most things did.

Mercy rolled her eyes. "Such a cop-out mother-y thing to say. No offense. But it's like the whole 'you're beautiful on the inside and that's what matters thing."

"You think she's wrong?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. He'd always smiled indulgently when she said that to him while always thinking she meant someone other than him. "Regular kids can't be special?"

She shrugged. "I suppose everyone has things they're good at and you can say it makes them special. And just being 'regular', whatever that is doesn't preclude being special. Me? Not special."

And she believed that. Okay, she turned into a coyote, but other than that, there was nothing special about her at all.

"You sound like you've given that speech before," he said breezily. If she didn't think she was special, Sam didn't think it was his job to convince her otherwise. Of course, he could tell there was something different about her but just bringing that up and surprising her seemed kind of mean.

"My mom would disagree but she's not here. Probably for the best since I'd spend all my time hiding if she was."

No, it was more like a lifetime of being told just how much she didn't measure up since she wasn't a werewolf.

"Really? Why would you be hiding from your mother?"

Still, she wasn't about to share that, so...

She just shrugged.

To that, Sam shrugged. "She's got her stuff, I've got mine and they're separate things. I don't really need her here to get by and I'm sure she's doing just fine without me too."

Mercy nodded. "Yeah, mine, as it turns out has had a whole new family for the past 12 years and apparently didn't think it was important to tell them or me about the other."
