Fifth Floor Common Room, Saturday evening

Bruce had no interest in dealing with the television today. It was going to just show something that some people would think he'd find embarrassing, he wouldn't be embarrassed (or even annoyed), and that would be it. But there was enough embarrassment and annoyance going around the dorms today, it seemed, so Bruce was going to try to tackle that in some small way: with cake.

Sure, he didn't usually eat much junk food, but he figured that a day when someone changed genders might not be so bad if it was changed to the day when someone changed genders and also had cake. In the meantime, he was just going to read a book about chess strategies while having a piece of cake himself.

"How come you get to look normal when I'm stuck like this again?" Quinn asked, wandering in and eying the cake. "Or are you a girl who just looks like Bruce? Hi."

"No, I'm just normal," Bruce said. "It seems like all the boys are. I'm sure we'll pay for this eventually."

"Probably, but that doesn't make today much better," Quinn groused, and cut herself a slab of cake. "This might make today better."

"That's why it's there," Bruce said, flashing a smile. "I figure it's the least I could do for the girls here as an apology for not being changed."

"It's a cliche, but cake does make some things better," Quinn acknowledged as she scraped off some icing with her fork. "I'm not as mad about being a boy as I was last year, just ... over it."

Annie had been lucky this weekend. She didn't even know yet that anything was off. She was just on the lookout for something to do since she was caught up on all her homework, and so she wandered to the fifth floor.

"Hi. There's cake now?" Which was a not-asking way of asking whether it was for sharing.

"It's mainly for the girls who were less fortunate for you, but I'm having some," Bruce said, holding up his own plate. "So feel free."

"There are girls less fortunate than me?" she asked, totally confused by that.

"So you haven't noticed it yet?" Bruce asked. "A lot of them have turned into boys for the time being."

Annie raised her eyebrows at him, waiting for the rest of the joke. "Okay, but really, what are you talking about?"

"How come you still get to look like yourself?" Quinn asked through her pout (and a mouthful of cake). "It's not faaaaaair."

"Because I can't see a penis till college! Um. I always look like myself," she said. "And you are...?"

Because guess who was not making assumptions.

Quinn's look was only mildly affronted; matching people to the wrong bodies wasn't easy the first time through.

"Quinn," she said. "Fabray, not a new student with the same name. The island likes doing this every so often. Just in case we weren't insane enough."

She shrugged. "You got lucky."

"So unfair," Mercy grumbled when she saw Annie still in her right body. "I think I'd rather be an animal than this."

At least she had some experience with being an animal.

Mercy was in a grumpy mood. Not only was she in a male body, which, no, she didn't like, but it was also considerably taller than her normal one which meant that the loose pajama pants she'd found to wear looked more like capris.

"I don't think even cake will help today," she said, in a voice much deeper than her own.

"It won't make everything better, but it could help a little," Bruce said.

Mercy made a face. "I don't know. Is the frosting really sweet and thick? That might help."

Sugar. That always made things better, didn't it?

She made her way over to the counter to heat up some water for hot chocolate, but stopped to stare at her hands. "These things ae huge? It's ridiculous."

"Not overly sweet or think," Bruce admitted. "But it's very good."

The pout grumpy-expression should have given Bruce a clue to the identity of the blond wearing a rough grey-green shirt and a bed-sheet knotted around their waist into a make-shift skirt who'd just stomped into the common room.

Cara grunted Bruce's name as she sat down.

Mercy grumbled back in empathy.

"Making hot chocolate if you want some."

Cara mumbled a thank-you, but it was hard to tell with the permasulk she'd fallen into.

Mercy wasn't much better, but managed to bang down a full mug next to her without actually breaking it or spilling anything. Barely.

Some were easier to guess than others. Also, there didn't seem to be that many girls in the school who didn't have something stretchy they could temporarily use to cover their new parts. The one who exclusively wore leathers would presumably fall into that category, though.

"Having a rough time today?"

"What was your first clue?" Cara's pout deepened as she sunk into the couch and crossed her arms. She didn't like wearing skirts even when she was in her right body.

"The grunting, moping, and sheet are all tied for that spot," Bruce said. "You've at least been through this before, right? It's just temporary."
