The Roof, Late Saturday Morning

Fall was coming, Karolina could feel it. She wasn't sure how she felt about it, the whole idea of fall on the east coast, though she supposed she was going to take it as it came. No use fighting the seasons.

Still, she'd taken her glorious breakfast of a Pop-Tart up on the roof this morning, sitting on the ledge and looking out over the town. The day was mostly cloudy, but even with just a little sun coming through every once in a while, she was happy enough. Recharging.

And after hesitating and fidgeting a while, she even took off her bracelet. There was no one else on the roof. She could let her true colors show – if that's what they were, the shimmery yellow and pink and blue. She wasn't sure yet.

But it did still feel nice to be out in the open air.

"Oh, man, I have to get a coat," Olive remembered, sighing. Stupid east coast. "But yeah, I bet. I have a bitch of a time matching pink with my hair, so. I will never complain again."

"We found that yellow worked pretty well for me," Karolina replied, though really, it had probably been mostly that it had been Liara who'd said that. "Usually I just shop for... human colors, though."

"Again with the 'probably easier,'" Olive agreed. "This is sort of noticeable. Can you fly without being all twinkly, or is it an all-or-nothing thing?"

"It's all or nothing," Karolina said. "With the bracelet on, I'm just... ordinary."

And sometimes she preferred that.

"I'd have a hard time not taking it off just to show off, sometimes," Olive noted. "I'm all for being ordinary, but...sometimes it's just nice to be noticed at all, you know?"

And here, she was beginning to feel like the only non-special kid around, anyway.

"I guess both things have their pros and cons," said the girl who would have gone back to being oblivious to her powers (and the wrongdoings of her parents) in a heartbeat, given the chance. "Depends on your point of view."
