The Roof [Monday afternoon]

Four had spent the last week exploring the island, learning the ways out, the places that were easiest to defend, the places that served food (he'd have to talk to the faction leaders about getting his monthly points for food and clothing converted into something he could use here), the places that sold clothing, and most importantly the shooting range and gym.

He was pretty impressed with the facilities, despite Chuck's warnings about them.

And now he was up on the second to last place he had to scout out--the roof--staying by the door and breathing through his fear of heights. After he was done here, he'd check out Selkie Point.

His eyes closed briefly as he worked to calm the pounding of his heart. He'd check out Selkie Point tomorrow, probably. Maybe even the next day.

"No sailboats either?" Those seemed to be a little more the speed of a small place such as this. "Rowboat, even? Not that you'd do much swinging or climbing in one of those but better than nothing?"

"Rowboat don't really help, no," Edward said with a slight snort. "I've been down by the rocks. It's practically barren."

"This is the closest I've gotten to a mountain so I think I might understand how you're feeling," Nathan said sympathetically. "But, at least there's water, right? A big ocean?"
doesnotkneel: (edward: cautious)

"There is that," Edward said, casting a look over his shoulder. "The view's magnificent from here - I do wonder how far the water stretches, opposite the end of land we're tethered to."

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-12 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"That is something I don't know," Nathan admitted with a little shrug. "And probably won't ever know, honestly. I can't swim. It'd probably be a hilarious sight if I tried."
doesnotkneel: (edward: listening intently)

"You can't swim?" Edward looked back at him. "Place like this, that ought to be dangerous. Never learned?"

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-12 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"No one ever taught me," Nathan told him, shrugging. "We didn't live close to the ocean and I tended to be able to cross rivers at their shallow points or I'd go around them. Guess I never had the need."

"We'll have to fix that soon, then," Edward said lightly. "It'd be a shame if you fell off the docks and drowned."

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-12 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"My plan was to not even get near the docks," Nathan said, making a face. "That'd stop the possible drowning, wouldn't it?"

"It's not safe being unable to swim in a place like this, mate, whether you try to steer clear or not," Edward said.

With that, he tried to pat Nathan on the back.

Once Nathan realized what Edward was going to do, he tensed but didn't move away. His back had long since healed but the simple act of touching was so, so unfamiliar due to how he'd been treated when he'd been younger.

"I don't think they teach swimming lessons here," Nathan joked, ignoring that he'd gotten tense when someone touched him. "Unless I somehow missed that particular class sign up."

Edward made a note of the reaction, but it didn't change his own behavior any. "Ah, who needs the adult teachers?" he said. "I'll take you down to the beach one good day, we'll work it out."

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-12 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"You sure about that?" Nathan asked, surprised at the offer. "I've been told I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to learning certain things."
doesnotkneel: (edward: easy smile)

[personal profile] doesnotkneel 2014-05-12 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Edward grinned at him. "Worst that could happen, we teach you how to drown with dignity in a puddle," he said. "Like I said, we'll sort it out, it's not that difficult."

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-12 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks," Nathan said, still surprised and a little shy now. Everything was so strange and different here. No one seemed to be doing things so he'd owe them something. "If I drown with dignity, I promise I won't blame you from the afterlife."

See, he could even joke about that.

"Then we have ourselves an appointment," Edward said, and nodded at the ocean in the distance. "Whatever day the sun breaks out of the clouds next, come find me."

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-12 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nathan nodded. "Will do. Thanks again."
doesnotkneel: (edward: by the sea)

"No problem at all," Edward replied. "Be a shame to see you go out in the big blue yonder."
