The Roof [Monday afternoon]

Four had spent the last week exploring the island, learning the ways out, the places that were easiest to defend, the places that served food (he'd have to talk to the faction leaders about getting his monthly points for food and clothing converted into something he could use here), the places that sold clothing, and most importantly the shooting range and gym.

He was pretty impressed with the facilities, despite Chuck's warnings about them.

And now he was up on the second to last place he had to scout out--the roof--staying by the door and breathing through his fear of heights. After he was done here, he'd check out Selkie Point.

His eyes closed briefly as he worked to calm the pounding of his heart. He'd check out Selkie Point tomorrow, probably. Maybe even the next day.

"Planning for eventualities, yes," Four replied, nodding. "I'd rather be prepared."

"You gonna just jump if you have to use the roof as an escape route?" Nathan wondered, walking over and peering down. It wasn't that far but still, he figured there'd be some broken bones. "Seems like a bit of a drop."

"I can climb," Four said. "I just needed to see how far the drop was. It's not so bad. I jumped about this far for my initiation."

"Initiation?" Nathan asked, looking back over at her. "Into a gang?"

That was the only thing he knew initiations tended to happen for.

"Into my faction," Four said, "so...sort of."

Especially if you asked any of the other factions. Dauntless had a reputation for being brutal.

"We had to drop off a building to get into our headquarters," Four explained. "If you missed, well..."

"You ended up with a broken body?" Nathan guessed because yeah. "Did many people miss?"

"Not this year," Four said, "but we were also the smallest initiate group in Dauntless history. I think the cowards aren't even trying to join any more."

"What does Dauntless mean?" Nathan asked curiously. "I've only ever heard of daunting."

"Without fear," Four replied simply.

"I guess a jump off a building would prove that you're without fear. Or crazy," Nathan said, shrugging. "Why don't you like heights?"

"I just don't," Four replied, "though the jump didn't help."

Nathan nodded and didn't push. "You new here too? Did the initiation not end really well if you're here?"

Four smiled--a rare thing for him. "The other way," he said. "I was first in my group and had my choice of assignments. I chose to come here--no one has gone outside our perimeter since the war."

Nathan nodded quietly. "So, being here is like...a mission for you?"
