During class on Wednesday, Kathy and Raven had decided to have a Revengers marathon. They probably wouldn't get through all of them, considering there were almost twenty hours of film to get through, but they could at least watch the first three or four (maybe even five?) without going stir-crazy.

With her only class of the day canceled, Kathy came right back to her room, grabbed her laptop to plug into the TV so they could watch the movies on a decent-sized screen, and put in an order for a ridiculous number of pizzas and sodas to be delivered. They'd need to keep their strength up somehow during the marathon, wouldn't they? Superhero movies, pizza, soda, and Raven was bringing the popcorn--what a great way to start the weekend!

Popcorn and, after a quick run into town -- and a handwavy and precarious interaction with the freaky pink pony -- a large supply of candy as well. It was the start of a summery weekend, gorging themselves on tasty food was pretty much mandatory, right?

She swung by her room to change -- into her natural shape and into actual clothing, so she wouldn't have to concentrate on holding it while they watched, and then headed upstairs to the fifth floor.

"Oh that pizza smells heavenly," she said as she came in. "This really is the best idea."

"Hi!" Kathy's grin grew even wider as she took in Raven's appearance. "Not using your passing privilege today?" she teased, hopping up to offer a hug. "And of course it is, we're brilliant. I didn't know what kind of toppings you liked, so I got a bunch of different ones. Please help yourself."

Even Kathy couldn't eat this much pizza in one sitting.

"All of them," Raven said. "I like all the toppings." She set her offerings down near the pizza and got herself a plate, then flopped down onto the couch. "I am going to relax completely today. Which means no working to hold onto a shape."

"In that case, you can help yourself to the anchovy-and-hot sauce pizza," Kathy said, not that she'd ordered any such thing. "All tuckered out from your grueling schedule of classes this week?"

The slice Raven pulled out was heavily loaded with veggies, actually, but she wouldn't object to anchovy-and-hot-sauce until after she tried it. "I'm working as a TA for a frustrated new teacher," Raven said. "It's totally stressful."

It really wasn't.

"Is it?" Kathy asked, looking sympathetic. "What's he got you doing? I thought most TAs were just glorified coffee-fetchers."

She wasn't, at least not this semester, but Outdoor Adventures wasn't really a traditional class. "What class is this again?"

"The Day After Doomsday," Raven said, dramatically spreading her hands. "It's like one of those video game things, only totally immersive. Everyone keeps trying to just do their own thing, so he's got me trying to get them to talk to each other so he doesn't end up just directing everything. I think we did better this week than last week, though."

Jalian wandered down and smiled when she saw Kathy - then smiled wider when she saw Raven, looking natural, even!

"Hello!" She glanced at the screen curiously. "What are you watching?"

"I took that class last year, when it was being taught by Reno!" Kathy said, remembering her first inadvisable crush on a questionable authority figure fondly. "What kind of scenarios have you been through so far?"

Reno had taught the class a little differently.

"We're watching the Revengers movies--fun, superhero fluff," Kathy said, pulling on Raven's arm so they could shift over and make room for Jalian on the couch if she wanted. And if the way they had shifted meant that the space in question was right next to Raven, well, that was surely coincidence.

Surely.

"Have you heard about them? They're a pretty popular movie franchise right now, based on a longstanding series of comic books."

"Um. Only one? We're stuck in the dorms and there are monsters outside and we have to work out what we're going to do about it. I'm going to go scouting when I figure out a shape I can take that won't immediately get killed." She smiled faintly. "But I told him he could kill me off anyway if he wanted, to get the others to take it seriously."

"Ooooh," Kathy said. "I remember that one, yeah. Reno had us go through a bunch of different scenarios--possibly because we all got in trouble after the monsters outside the dorms one. We spent most of our time arguing about what to do, rather than doing anything at all."

So, sort of the opposite problem?

"What would you do if he killed you off? Would you come back the next week, or...?"

"I volunteered to play a monster." She was still a little too thrilled by that idea. "Though I guess that's not really necessary, with the Danger Shop and all."

Did Jalian mind that the space was next to Raven? Not at all!

"I have heard a little about them." Jalian made a derisive noise. "I tried to watch a movie once. It was only a collection of pictures strung together and made to appear on the screen very fast. Sounds that were not always synchronized came with them. I don't understand the attraction."

"You just want to freak out your classmates and camp out near the doorways," Kathy accused, laughing. "It has nothing to do with actually wanting to help out--Mr. Hardison's the one who's teaching that, right?"

"It's a form of storytelling," Kathy pointed out. "Using fast images and sometimes unsynchronous noises to do so. You can learn a lot about a culture by the stories they tell--especially movies like these, which are meant to appeal to the broadest possible audience and be enjoyed without being thought about too deeply."

"But you don't need to learn about the culture," Jalian protested. "Why do so many people enjoy them?"

"Well yeah," Raven said. "What fun is being a shapeshifter if you can't pull a few tricks, sometimes?" She nodded at the mention of Hardison's name. "That's him. Do you know him at all?"

"He's dating Eliot and Parker and I know them," Kathy explained. She and Hardison didn't interact much for some reason or another. "He's kinda geeky and likes computers, that's pretty much all I know."

And then she was smirking at Raven. "Yeah. A few tricks sometimes. I'm surprised you haven't been lurking near the bathrooms to play pranks on the newbies."

Kathy stop giving Raven ideas.

"Why does anyone like stories?" Kathy asked. "They're entertaining. They reflect ourselves and our believes. They take our minds off of our problems and give us someone to root for for two hours. What's not to like?"

"I don't actually know either of them that well, either." For some reason she didn't hang out often with Eliot, especially. "And I did hang out at the picnic wearing nothing on top but fake pasties," Raven offered.

"You did what?!" Kathy had missed that, apparently.

"It was Jalian's idea. And the 'pasties' were actually just my regular skin."

She felt that part was particularly clever and subversive, yes.

"By looking at pictures?" Jalian was still a little dubious, though she was trying to understand.

Kathy was hiding giggles behind her hand. "Well, that's pretty fair," she conceded. "After all, the guys were walking around topless and no one would think twice about that!"
