2nd Floor Common Room, Thursday

First had been the conversation with Hyacinthe, then with Isabela and Dante, and now Ada was hard at work in the little kitchen of the second floor common room, with baking sheets strewn around and the oven going at a steady 350 degrees. Sugar, food coloring, honey powder, luster dust... a veritable mad scientist lab set-up with everything she needed to make up little baggies of totally edible glitter.

Sometimes a girl didn't always have the spare cash to buy the fancy stuff, and so Ada had learned early how to make it herself. Besides, it was good to practice so that she wouldn't forget how to mix it up, and maybe the island just needed a little bit more sparkly cheer.

"An' lessons t' go with 'em," she said happily. "She really knows how t' give a girl a workout."

Okay, so maybe the most screwed-up thing wasn't Dante's urge to head back home, but his missing dirty-drive this week. The weird, somewhat-clear spots in his memory of the weekend were screwing with him.

"Yeah, that's our Iz all right," Dante said. He wandered towards the couch and collapsed on it. "Never really seen her fight, though."

"She got me little throwin' ones," Ada said, leaning against the counter and holding up her hands to show Dante the approximate size. "First I gotta learn how to throw while holdin' still, then while movin' and such. That way I don't gotta get up close, I can throw an' run away."

"I ain't seen her fight, but she throws beautifully."

"Throwing's good," Dante said, flicking some more lettuce onto the floor. "You shouldn't be running straight into trouble anyway."

"Hell no," Ada agreed, shaking her head. "Savin' the world is for you people with useful powers."

Not the girl who could breathe underwater.

"I've had enough trouble, thanks. 'M gonna go in th' opposite direction."
