Floor 2 common room

::the teeniest bit tipsy, Cally decides that reading alone in her room is no way to spend her friday night::

::unfortunately, despite her misadventures today, doesn't think anyone she really knows isn't preoccupied, so she just heads to the common room... and starts reading again::

"Oh, it's no problem," River reassures her. "I'm River. I'm down in 217. We met last night, when there was the confusion about Lee's door?" She tilts her head and smiles at the other girl. "So... did you win the pool?"

River shrugs. "I usually don't sleep all that much anyways... kind of a remnant of old behavioral patterns. And Adama's either already out cold or sufficiently sober as to not deluge me with his thoughts." At Cally's confused reaction, she confides, "I'm psychic, after a fashion. And Lee's thoughts are..." She pauses, searching for the right word. "... often obstreperous (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=obstreperous&x=0&y=0)."

"Anyways," she continues with a shrug. "I'm caught up on my reading, I don't have any tremendous projects waiting for me, and I felt like stretching my legs."

Canting her head at an oblique angle, she considers Cally with some curiosity. "And you?"

River raises her hands with a placating expression. "Don't worry, I'm not reading people around me all the time. Most people, like you and your roommate Joan, have fairly quiet thoughts." She makes a face. "Adama, on the other hand..."

She shakes her head in dismissal. "I'm not thinking about him tonight. Scrabble, you said? I'm up for a game or two."

"That shouldn't be hard. I think I've played this maybe once in my life." River looks momentarily wistful as she mixes the lettered tiles. "They didn't have it where I grew up, and after I went away to school the first time..." Her eyes close in involuntary memory, and her lips set themselves in a grim line. "That wasn't the sort of thing they gave us much time for."

She breathes in deep, then lets the air seep from her in a tension-releasing sigh. "So. Ready to pick yours?"

River stretches out a hand and picks up a tile at random. "Hmmmm... H. So where are you from, anyways?"

River walks her fingers amongst the tiles and pulls out seven tiles, stacking them neatly on her wooden stand. "Oh, like Lee then?" She considers, then shuffles the tiles around to an order that better suits her. "I grew up on Osiris, in the Alliance. I've done a lot of travelling since then, though. It's weird, I guess, how many planets seem to have climates comparable to the kind of fractured ecologies here. Most of the places I've been to look like what they call the 'American Southwest'."

"So what are you planning to do this weekend?" River queries, at the same time contemplating what to do with this unruly mess of letters. "I keep hearing about dorm room mini-parties that are lots of fun, with plenty to drink and weird games. Something called poker, and something else called Truth or Dare?"

River ponders the tiles she's got for a moment, then ventures a less-than-impressive initial sally. B-E-D, something she doesn't plan to get to until much later. "Seven points?"

She pulls out three new tiles from the pile to replace the ones she's used, and considers telling Cally that most peoples' thoughts get louder when they're drunk. Naaaah. She looked spooked enough when I first told her.

River rolls her eyes at the tiles she got. "Yeah, Truth or Dare. I have no idea how it's played."

River peers over at the notebook and reads the numbers even though they're upside down. "12? Ohh, jeez... I must be more tired than I thought. And the first word down counts for double?"

She looks at the letters she's just chosen, then pulls three out and sets them in front of the E that Cally just laid down. "H-O-V spells 'hove (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=hove&x=0&y=0)'. Past tense of 'heave', for, um, ten points?"

"Sounds like it could be an enjoyable waste of time," River quips. "And if nothing else, a party game like that could help those of us on the second floor get to know each other better."
