First Floor Lobby: Welcome The New Students

A table full of food (including some suspicious looking cupcakes) and drinks sit in the lobby. A bunch of name tags sit next to the food so that everyone can write their name down.

"Ahhh, of course. Kansas. Wonderful place that I know nothing about, I'm afraid. Not even enough to fake knowing about it. Didn't know about the meteor thing, for example. I was unaware that was a major problem these days. Though I know the dinosaurs didn't like it."

"The dinosaurs...?" Lana looks confused for a second, then grins. "Oh... gosh, yes. Sorry, took me a minute there. Well, we got more than our share of meteors and ever since these... 'mutants' have been turning up. Pretty scary stuff."

Pip laughs. "It's alright. I always worry that my jokes don't translate well into English."

He raises an eyebrow. "Mutants? There are mutants here too? What are the mutants like?"

"Well, I don't know about mutants here - though it wouldn't surprise me at all. But back home... well something about the meteor rocks *changed* people. Turned people into bug-men or shapechangers or... all sorts of weird things. Seemed like every week something new turned up."

Pip raised his eyebrows in suprise. "Wow. Hasn't the government intervened or anything? That sounds like something they'd want to look into."

"Right," Lana rolled her eyes. "Like anyone would believe us. No, as far as I know, they're more like this sort of open secret."

"Ahhh. One of those. Guess it prepared you for this place then, at least? Though from the sound of it, home is more dangerous than school."

"So far I've spent less time in the clinic or hospital here than I have at home. Even this," she gestured towards her head, "happened at home over break. So... yeah, but still... there are things here I never even believed existed, people from other planets, witches, vampires... It's a pretty unique place."

Pip winced. "What happened? Mutant attack? Or did you fall off a horse or something?"

"Good guess. Second one. I got thrown from my horse. Did a real number on myself too. In fact, I have to stop by the clinic when I leave here. The doctors back at the hospital in Smallville said I should be seen by a doctor here after 5 days - just to make sure I'm healing okay."

Pip flinches. "Ouch. How's the doctor around here? Doctors say I have to get my vision checked every once in a while, see how I'm adapting to life with one eye."

"I've only had to deal with Dr. Wilson, but he's been great. I'm told Dr. House is really good as well."

She bites her lip and hesitates before asking, "What happened to your eye? If you don't mind me asking that is."

"Cool. I guess I'll have to go meet them sooner or later."

Pip grits his teeth. "Er.. some other time. Maybe." Desperately trying to change the subject, he grasps at the first question that comes to mind. "So, what drew you to this school?"

"Sorry," Lana backs down immediately. "I shouldn't have asked."

"What brought me here? Well... I wanted a change. Something different. I wanted to be somewhere where everyone hadn't known me my entire life. Guess I got all those things in spades!"

Pip grimaces. "It's alright, you didn't know."

"I have a theory that says that nothing is actually normal. It's all just weird in different ways. I mean, to me, travelling around with a mercenary company all over the world is normal. For you, living in farm country with mutants is normal."

"Well, given that theory, you'll probably do very well here." Lana laughs.

Pip smiles. "Here's hoping! Couldn't be any worse than some of the places I've been."

"For your sake, I hope you're right about that."
