Animal-Balancing Contest (evening, FHT - first floor lobby)

Rory arrived in the lobby balancing a tank with a wee turtle in it against one hip, a box from J,GOB in the opposite arm, and a flying puppy on a leash leading her.

She tied Vladdie to the leg of a table, set Yoda's tank and the cake down, and looked around to see what she still needed to set up.

[~~Yes, even crack-addled ideas like this need OCD threads. Wait for 'em.~~ They're up, but play on the contest itself won't start until 5:30 EST.

ETA: And yes, it originally said it was in the afternoon. This is now set about 8:30 PM FHT.

Parker studied her, and said, "Here at Fandom, or here, watching crazy people balance small domestic animals on their heads?" The raised eyebrow probably pointed out that hey, one of those options didn't make Aeryn as sane as she thought she was.

"Both," she says. "This is the oddest thing I have ever seen in my life."

"I still think Marty as Principal Connor beats it. But only because there was a Muppet Chicken involved." She grinned. "And Johnina might be on that list too."

Aeryn shakes her head. And she chose to come back here, what the frell. "Don't forget the pageant," she says.

"Oh, who could?" Snickering, Parker said, "It might be indelibly etched in my brain." She cocked her head. "I like to think that this kind of insanity-- balances, shall we say, the zombie and snow monster kind."

"At least I can handle the zombie and snow monster kind. This is just strange."

"Yeah. Although I've heard of stranger." She cocked her head. "But your average rodeo or county fair probably isn't something you'd have run across before."

Aeryn pauses. "It might be best to skip those for a while," she says slowly. "Or at least try to skip them..."

"Yeaaah. They're not my cup of tea either." Parker smirked. "This, though, amuses me. I've given up on the 'why', and just started to be glad when no one expects me to participate. And allow me to mock."

"I can't even mock," she says. "It's like watching something crash, though, it's hard to look away."

"You lack context." Parker tapped her chin with one finger. "Whereas I am fairly certain they're no crazier than usual."

"Oh, I know they're all insane, it's just... been a while since I've actually seen it."

"Two weeks away was that long? Or was it longer, for you?"

She considers this, and answers, "Much longer." It felt that way, mostly.

"That's got to make it harder," Parker said, taking her literally. "Since we just had two weeks of going 'damn, wish Aeryn were here', and you had however-long of being back, then another relocation wrench."

It's a little strange to hear that from anyone but John. "It's surviveable," she says. "It gets easier."

"I'm glad to hear that," Parker said simply. "I mean, I know this place is crazy. It's crazy by human standards. But anywhere else, it might be harder."

"At least here I knew what I was getting into coming back," she admits.

"Was that not quite the case, back there?" Parker asked, as carefully as she could.

"No," she says slowly, "I knew exactly what I was getting into there. That was the problem." She purses her lips into a tight smile. "It didn't go the way I thought it would."

"Ah." Parker considered that from several angles, then cautiously asked, "Was it because you'd been here? They sent you here in the first place. They should have been prepared for you to have-- adapted."

"I don't think anyone thought I would have adapted that much. I certainly didn't." She shrugs. "It doesn't matter. I'm back here now."

"It matters." Parker paused, not sure how to explain how or why, then just gave up on being tactful. "They suck, Aeryn. Sorry. I'm sorry you got screwed over by your command. I'm glad you're here because they couldn't adapt to you. Which, I know, not my call, and my opinion wasn't asked for. But there you go."

Aeryn wonders just how much Parker's been able to figure out, and realizes she probably hasn't been keeping things as quiet as she thought. Or maybe being this quiet gave her away.

She nods. "Thanks," she says, and she's not mad, but she needs to just get some space. "I'll see you later?"

"No problem. See you in ACJ tomorrow, Aeryn."
