Gym, early Saturday

It was very early on Saturday morning, so hopefully there wouldn't be anybody else around in the gym. She needed to work out some frustration, preferably without being recognized by more people she had never seen before in her life.

She pulled out the mats, laying them down at a decent distance from each other, then stepped onto on one and thought for a moment.

"Yeah, well I try." He smiled again. "I'm Dean. I'm new here."

"Aeryn," she tells him. "And I figured as much."

"And you're not new here," Dean guessed.

"Been here since September," she nods, going for another punch to the bag. "And by now I know most of the people who came in here. At least, I did before this last week."

Dean nodded. "Yeah, there are a hell of a lot of us newbies, aren't there? Never thought summer school would be so popular."

"There are more of you every enrollment," she says, shaking her head. "Maybe it's something about Fandom. I honestly don't know."

"There's definitely something about Fandom, that's for sure," Dean pointed out. "This place is the weirdest I've ever been, and I've seen some pretty weird things."

"You've gotten all the usual warnings, then?" Aeryn asks. "Zombies, snow monsters, gremlins, vampires, spontaneous animal transformations?"

"Yes, yes, yes, yes and no," Dean replied, ticking them off on his fingers. "I don't think anyone's mentioned spontaneous animal transformations... unless that has to do with the invasion of tiny dancing bunnies?"

"Not as far as I know," she says, thinking about it. "Logan was a bunny twice, Cameron was a wolf, Beka was a hamster which still makes me laugh, Zero was a pink cat... And those were just the times that it wasn't on purpose."

Dean shook his head. "Every time I think I've heard the limits of this place's freakiness, I just hear something else that's even freakier. Was there some pattern to the changes or was it a case of just waking up hamster?"

Aeryn pauses. "I'm not entirely sure. It just... happens. Also, watch out for locker 327. I don't know what happens in there, exactly, but I know it isn't good. There may be students lost in there from last fall."

"Is that where the portal is?" Dean asked, making a mental note of the number. "This guy Walter mentioned to me that there was a portal in one of the lockers but he didn't say which one."

"That would be the one," she says. "I think that's the only one."

God, he hoped so. After the last time, Dean really didnt want to have anything to do with another portal. "Don't worry, I'll keep my distance. I've had my fill of portals for this lifetime. And probably a couple of others as well."

Aeryn has more or less given up on the bag for the time being. "So you're used to this."

"This?" he waved a hand in the air vaguely to mean the school in general. "No. There's weirdness here I've never heard of before. But some... like zombies, and portals, yeah, I've had my run-ins."

"Are you from here?" she wonders. "This time and dimension?"

Somewhere along the line this question became normal.

"More or less." He frowned. "I think. Definitely the here part, I was born a few states over. Time, I'm from 1997. It's close anyways. What about you?"

"Space," she answers with a shrug.

"Really?" Dean's eyes widened and he grinned in delight. "You're an alien?"

She nods. "I'm not used to people smiling when they hear that."

"I think it's cool. I never met a real live alien before. And I gotta say, you're a hell of a lot prettier than what the average little green man is supposed to look like."

Aeryn sighs. "I suppose the average little green man would actually be a Hynerian, in which case they might take offense to the word 'man'," she says.

Dean nodded though the name meant nothing to him of course. "What are you? If it's not rude to ask?"
