2nd Floor Common Room [Late Thursday Afternoon]

The temperature on the second floor was unusually hot. Bridge could, of course, do the sensible thing and just hang out in another floor's common room. But where's the fun in that?

So he's lounging on the couch in the second floor common room. Without a shirt. As you do.

Dawn filled two glasses with ice, then with bottled water from the refrigerator. She handed one to Sam. "Water." She took a very large swallow, then held the glass against her temple.

Sam took a sip of water and then held his own glass against her head as well. "That feel a bit better?"

Dawn nodded. "Thank you. What about you? Still hot?"

"Yeah," Sam admitted, looking down at his usual layers and jeans. "I didn't exactly dress for non-air-conditioned weather."

"You could take some of the layers off," Dawn suggested, trying not to look too hopeful.

Hopeful or not, it really was a good suggestion, and Sam looked around to make sure that no one besides Dawn was really watching him, before pulling off his longer shirt, leaving him in just a t-shirt with his jeans. "Okay, that's definitely a little better."

Dawn blinked. Yes, it definitely was. She took a big gulp of her water, and offered Sam's back to him. "I'm glad. You were looking a little toasty."

Sam took the glass and ran the bottom along his neck. "Yeah, and I don't toast well. I've spent way too much time in moderate midwestern weather."

Dawn couldn't take her eyes off the glass and didn't even realize she was staring.

Sam was a little more aware that Dawn might be staring at the glass, but just to check, he deliberately drew the glass to the right.

And her eyes followed the path of the glass. She blinked.

Sam laughed and pulled the glass away from his skin, waving it slowly in front of her. "Hello? Earth to Dawn. Are you still thirsty or something?" Clearly, she wouldn't be staring at his water for any other reason.

"Wha? Huh?" She shook her head to clear it and blinked owlishly at Sam as she drank some of her own water. "Did you say something?"

"Yeah, I asked if you think I should take my other shirt off," Sam teased, laughing.

Dawn didn't squeal. Really. There may have been a wee bounce before she tried to play it cool. "Um, I guess that's up to you? It wouldn't be the first time you've been shirtless in a common room, though."

"I was just kidding," Sam said, trying to explain as he glanced around. "And seriously, I'm not sure if me being shirtless would be appreciated by everyone in here, even if it is something everyone's seen before."

Dawn said something under her breath. "Oh, well, then. Ha ha. Funny. Yep."

Sam couldn't help but notice that Dawn seemed a bit disappointed, and that definitely hadn't been his intention. "Here," he said, handing her his glass. "Hold this."

Dawn took the water, wondering what Sam was up to.

Now that he had both hands free, Sam was able to reach down and take his t-shirt off too, giving Dawn a sort of bemused look as he held out his hand to take his water back. "There, now at least I wasn't kidding inappropriately. Is that better?"

Guh. Dawn took a sip of the water in her hand, completely forgetting it was Sam's, that she was supposed to be handing it back, that it might be a bad idea to get a stupid crush on the guy who was her roommate, her pseudo-sister's boyfriend, and her ex-boyfriend's brother, all at once.

She blinked and then nodded vigorously. "Ummmm...yes. Yes, that is definitely better. What about you? Are you cooler? Because if you're not, maybe you have a fever or need to go to the clinic or something."

It occurred to Dawn that she'd had much more success in Sex Ed.

Sam was certain that he should have felt more self conscious about being shirtless in front of Dawn, but he actually didn't feel that bad, especially with the way she was looking at him. "I'm a lot cooler, yeah," he said, content to let Dawn have all the water, since she'd seemed thirsty before.

"Oh, good. I wouldn't want you to get sick."

"I don't want to get sick either. Although, I guess now would be the time to do it since we have the week off with no workshops or classes."

"A whole week," Dawn smiled wistfully. "Lots of time to get into trouble, if we were into that kind of thing."
