Gym - Early Monday morning

Molly had promised Zuko a demonstration of her strength yesterday. So, she had stopped by his room at the agreed upon time in order to show him the way to the gym.

Walking into the gym, she was glad to see it was still empty. "Good. No one else is here yet." She turned to Zuko. "This is the gym. People come here to work out and exercise and practice sports and stuff."

Molly stood up straighter after he looked her over. "You bet I can," she said and made a shooing gesture to get him to move back a little.

Zuko stepped back, happy to let her have a go. He did look sceptical.

Molly moved to where Zuko had been standing by the head of the weight bench. But, instead of just picking up the bar, she reached down and picked up the whole bench with one hand. She gave Zuko an 'I told you so' smile.

"Impressive."

Molly set down the bench again. "Thank you."

"You can do that because you're a..." He tried to remember the word she had used. "Mutant?"

Molly nodded. "Yep, that's what gives me my strength."

"Does your nation use these abilities during wartime?" Zuko wanted to know.

That was a very touchy subject, but Zuko couldn't know that. "They wanted to, but most of the mutants would rather keep our cities free of criminals than go off to fight political wars."

"It's the nation's duty to keep the cities safe and fight the wars," Zuko pointed out.

"I will defend my home against all invaders," Molly said firmly, "but I won't go off to fight for something I don't believe in just because a politician says I should."

Zuko frowned at her. "You do not believe in your nation?"

"I believe in it's people, not it's politicians."

"You don't believe in your king?"

"We don't have a king."

Zuko frowned. "Queen?"

Molly shook her head. "My country doesn't have any kind of monarchy. We are ruled by a president who is elected for four years and can be re-elected for another four."

"That is ridiculous," Zuko decided.

Molly grinned. "Sometimes. But, it is all we have."

"What happened to the royal family?" he asked. "If there is no heir, surely there is a brother or uncle to take the throne."

"Our ancestors rebelled against the king that ruled over them more than two hundred years ago," Molly told him. "There is still a queen in England, that's a country across the ocean. That's the country that used to rule here."

"You rebelled? And the queen hasn't crushed you yet?" he shook his head.

Molly grinned. "Nope. We're much too strong now."

Zuko narrowed his eyes. "You can't have a country without a king."

Molly raised an eyebrow at him. "Over two hundred years of nationhood would prove that that's not true."
